Bathroom resealing in Cults

Bathroom resealing in Cults

It isn’t only bathrooms. Worktop upstands, sink edges and splashback joints get wet every single day, and water that gets into the back edge of a worktop can swell the board. We reseal them with a kitchen-suitable silicone, matched to the worktop where it’s on show. Common call-outs are for cracked, shrunken or lifting silicone and a reseal done over the top of the old bead, across sinks & splashbacks, baths and kitchen worktops & upstands.

In Scotland’s cities, including the area around Cults, many older flats had their bathrooms added into small rooms later on. Rooms like that are often small and slow to dry out, and steam with nowhere to go is what turns sealant black and grout grey.

We stand behind the work with a 12-month guarantee, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

Silicone being applied where a shower enclosure meets beige wall tiles

Do you need bathroom resealing in Cults?

Plenty of failed sealant has been laid over the top of older sealant. Fresh silicone cannot grip the old bead underneath, so it peels, leaks and hides mould behind it.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Black mould in the silicone that won’t clean off
  • A messy, uneven bead from a previous reseal
  • New sealant laid over old sealant that is now lifting
  • Gaps between the worktop and the wall

Schools such as Cults Academy are buildings too, and its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.

What to look for in a quote

  • How the colour is chosen
  • Whether the sealant suits the joint
  • How long to leave it before use
  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared

Choosing a sealant specialist

What happens on the day

The work is kept neat and contained to the area we are working on, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take two to three hours for a typical bath, depending on how much old sealant there is, and we explain the cure time before we leave. Inside a flat in Cults, the job is planned with you; outside, shared parts may need the factor or other owners involved. Tell us which applies when you book.

  1. Protection goes down around the bath, shower or worktop.
  2. We cut away the old sealant and clean off what’s left.
  3. We treat any mould and let the joint dry properly.
  4. Any bath is filled with water, then we lay a bead of anti-fungal silicone in white, clear or a matching colour.
  5. The joint is finished neatly and we explain when it can get wet.

How to prepare

  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises

Advice

Different surfaces, different methods

Kitchen worktops & upstands

Laminate worktops swell if water gets into the core. A continuous bead along the back keeps water out, as long as the worktop itself is firmly fixed.

Sinks & splashbacks

Where a splashback meets the worktop, there’s a joint that catches every splash. We renew it in clear, white or a matched colour.

When something else is needed

To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:

  • A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacement)
  • A bath or tray that moves because it is not properly supported
  • Cracked or missing grout between tiles (that is regrouting)

Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What we seal

  • Sinks & splashbacks
  • Wet rooms
  • Baths
  • Basins & vanity units
  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Kitchen worktops & upstands

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Bathrooms and kitchens in Cults

Aberdeen, the Granite City, has plenty of granite tenements, where, as in any flat, a failed seal can reach the flat below. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.

For landlords with property near Aberdeen station, mouldy sealant is one of the first things a new tenant notices, so it’s worth renewing between lets.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

Housing providers, facilities teams and property managers book us too. Several sites can go on one quote.

We also work for businesses, from offices to washrooms and kitchens. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.

Looking after it afterwards

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Squeegee the walls and tray after use
  • Use gentle cleaners on the silicone
  • Do not let bottles sit on the bead
  • Wait for the cure time we give you

Check the sealant now and then. A small split or a corner lifting is easy to spot, and if anything looks wrong, just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

A few black dots in the silicone soon become a black line. When it has grown right through, it rarely cleans out. Replacing the sealant early keeps the job small.

Cults questions

Can a failed shower seal in a tenement flat in Cults leak into the flat below?

Yes, it can. In a tenement, water that gets past failed sealant or cracked grout can run under the bath or tray and through to the ceiling below, and then the repair involves your neighbours too. Replacing tired sealant early is the simplest way to avoid that.
