Tongue: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Tongue?

Yes. Tongue is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is window mastic in a coastal place like Tongue any different?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

Do you seal inside as well as outside?

Yes. Plenty of draughts come through the inside joint as well as the outside, so sealing both is often worthwhile.

How long does it take to reseal the windows on a house?

The work takes most of a day for a typical house, less for a few frames. Access and the amount of old mastic make the biggest difference.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Landlords are often happy for the work to be arranged.

Do you work on first-floor windows?

Yes, where they can be reached safely. Tell us about access when you get in touch so we can plan the job.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No. New silicone won’t bond to old silicone, and it traps any mould or water underneath. We remove it all first.

Where do you work from?

We work from Crawley. Our applicators cover Tongue.

Window mastic in Tongue

There are two joints on most windows. The external joint is the weather seal; inside, the joint between frame and plaster stops draughts and tidies the reveal. We seal one or both, depending on what’s needed. Common call-outs are for rain getting in at the frame or under the sill and draughts coming in around windows and doors, on window sills, uPVC windows and composite doors.

In and around a place like Tongue, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill.

We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.

How to look after the new joints

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Keep paint and stain on wooden frames in good order
  • Avoid harsh chemicals near the mastic
  • Look round the frames every year or so
  • Avoid blasting the frames with a pressure washer

Keep the new mastic undisturbed while it cures, following the cure time we give you. Don’t point a pressure washer at the joints.

A failed joint lets water into the wall a little at a time. Often the first sign is a damp patch inside or flaking paint on the reveal. Catching it early keeps the fix to a reseal.

What affects the quote in Tongue

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • The type of sealant required
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask about the job first and send you a clear quote before we start.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • How we’d reach the joints

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.

Common problems we fix in Tongue

Sills take more water than any other part of a window, so the sill ends and the joint below the frame are common leak points. Failed sealant there lets rain into the wall or behind the frame.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Draughty joints inside around the window
  • Cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame
  • Leaking joints at the ends of sills
  • Damp patches on the reveal after heavy rain

For an older house near a landmark such as St Andrew's Church, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame.

10 questions to ask before booking

What happens on the day

There’s no need to move everything out, just the space around the work. Everything nearby is protected, and the work takes anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are in most cases. Outdoor work around Tongue depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We check how each frame can be reached safely.
  2. All the failed sealant is cut away.
  3. The surfaces are cleaned and left dry, and primed where the sealant calls for it.
  4. Deep voids are backed, then the sealant is gunned in.
  5. We tool the joint so water runs off, then clear up.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

Advice

Windows and doors in Tongue

Tongue is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for the mastic around window and door frames to keep out.

In and around Tongue, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Different surfaces, different methods

Aluminium frames

Bi-fold and sliding aluminium doors have long frame joints, and the bottom joint sees the most water. Each is cleaned, backed where deep and resealed.

Window sills

Masonry sills can have joints where water gets in, including the one between the sill and the frame above. We seal those with a sealant suited to masonry.

What we cannot put right

To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:

  • A door that needs adjusting, rehanging or new seals
  • Damp coming through the wall itself rather than the frame joint
  • A frame that has rotted at the joint

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

  • Timber windows & doors

DIY versus a professional finish

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
