When to call us in Drummore
On timber frames, paint and putty build up around the joint. Mastic painted over many times cracks with the paint, and the wood moves with damp as well as heat.
People generally contact us when they notice something like this:
- Gaps left after new windows were fitted
- Hard, cracked sealant around windows
- Cracked sealant at the sill ends
- Rain getting in at the frame or under the sill
In and around Drummore, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

How we handle window mastic in Drummore
Frames and walls do not move together. Heat and cold make frames grow and shrink against brick or render that hardly moves. That’s why the joint needs a flexible, low-modulus sealant rather than something rigid. If you’re dealing with sealant in the wrong colour for the frame and rain getting in at the frame or under the sill, we can help.
Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Drummore depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.
All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, in Drummore and everywhere else we cover.

What we do, step by step
There’s no need to move everything out, only the area right around the joints. We protect the rest, and the job takes a few hours for a few frames, or a day or more for a whole house for a typical job. Around Drummore, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.
- First we look at every frame and agree the list.
- We remove the old mastic and clean the frame and the wall.
- Deep gaps are filled with backing rod to set the depth.
- We apply a weatherproof sealant to match the frame and tool it neatly.
- Every joint is checked before we leave.
How to prepare
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
- Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
- Mention any tricky access

Related advice
What the job involves on each surface
Timber windows & doors
On period timber windows, traditional sand mastic is sometimes the better choice. We can talk through the options.
Composite doors
Composite doors are normally hung in an uPVC-type frame, and the joint around it is sealed like a window. We match the colour to the frame.
DIY sealant or a professional job?
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
For landlords and businesses
Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s quick to put right between tenancies. Several properties can go on one quote.
Letting agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the address, the job and how access works and we’ll quote.
When something else is needed
New sealant cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It won’t solve:
- Soft or decayed wood in the frame
- Penetrating damp from a failed cavity tray or render
- A sash or casement that won’t close properly
If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Questions from Drummore
Do you cover smaller places like Drummore?
Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Do you cover Drummore for window mastic?
Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Drummore is part of that. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.
Do I need to be at home?
If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. Once we have agreed the job, you don’t need to watch us work.
Can you reach windows above the ground floor?
Yes, in most cases. Access is planned before work begins, so mention the height and anything in the way.
I’m a tenant. Can you help?
Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Many landlords are glad to have it sorted.
Is the new sealant paintable?
Silicone generally won’t take paint. If you plan to paint, tell us first and we can use a paintable sealant where it suits the joint.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes. We’ve worked for hotels, offices and other businesses and we are fully insured.
How many windows can you do in a day?
A handful of frames is a short visit. We confirm the timing with your quote.
How to look after the new joints
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Wipe condensation off the frames
- Make sure the drainage slots aren’t blocked
- Keep timber frames painted
- Paint up to the joint, not over it
Timber frames need their paint kept up, since wood that gets wet swells and shrinks more. Keep paint off the silicone itself.
A failed joint lets water into the wall a little at a time. You might not see it until plaster blows or a damp patch appears inside. Catching it early keeps the fix to a reseal.
Drummore homes and the weather
Drummore is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.
Homes close to Old Parish Church and Burial-Ground include some older properties, and the joint between an old wall and a newer frame is generally the first place rain gets in.
