Window mastic near Cartsdyke

Windows and doors in Cartsdyke

Cartsdyke is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, often pointed into the wall with traditional sand mastic.

Homes close to St Laurence’s Church (Greenock) include some older properties, and the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall. For landlords with property near Whinhill station, cracked frame mastic tends to show up as a draught or damp complaint, so it’s worth checking between lets.

Cartsdyke is about 1 mile east of Greenock, in Inverclyde. Anywhere in PA15, our applicators can take on window mastic. We cover 19 towns and villages across Inverclyde, large and small. There’s also a page for Glasgow, roughly 19 miles from Cartsdyke.

Window mastic in Cartsdyke, done properly

A window frame and the wall around it expand and shrink at different rates. Heat and cold make frames grow and shrink against brick or render that hardly moves. So the sealant has to stretch and recover, which is why we use a low-modulus product. We work on timber windows & doors, window sills and patio & French doors, and common reasons people get in touch are hard, cracked sealant around windows and mastic that’s falling out in pieces.

Outdoor sealant needs a dry surface, so window work around Cartsdyke is planned around the weather. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

All our work comes with our one-year guarantee.

Questions from Cartsdyke

Do you work for landlords with property near Whinhill station?

Yes. We work for letting agents and landlords as well as householders, and several properties can go on one quote. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Is Cartsdyke within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do the sealants smell?

It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all.

Does the work come with a guarantee?

Yes, for 12 months. A yearly look at the joints helps them last.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We are fully insured.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We’re approved under the ARBOMaster scheme, the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants.

Will it make a mess?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we tidy up before we go.

Is it worth trying it myself?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.

What happens on the day

When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes most of a day for a typical house, less for a few frames. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. First, we go round the frames with you and agree the list.
  2. The old mastic is cut out and scraped back to clean surfaces.
  3. Where the gap is deep, backing rod goes in first.
  4. The new sealant goes on in white, brown, anthracite grey, black or clear to suit.
  5. Every joint is tooled smooth and checked before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in

Advice

Keeping the joints in good condition

How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Paint up to the joint, not over it
  • Avoid harsh chemicals near the mastic
  • Air rooms to keep condensation down around windows
  • Make sure the drainage slots aren’t blocked

A yearly look round the frames is enough. Small splits are simple to catch before they leak.

A small gap around a frame only grows. As the old mastic shrinks further, more air gets through, and heat escapes around the frame. Resealing closes it.

Landlord and commercial work in Cartsdyke

For anyone letting property in or around Cartsdyke, several properties can be quoted together. Just tell us the addresses and what each one needs.

Whether it’s one flat or a portfolio, you get the same standard of work: old sealant fully removed, joints prepared properly and a one-year guarantee.

What we are called out for in Cartsdyke

Every frame moves through the day. A plastic or aluminium frame lengthens in sunshine and shortens as it cools, while the brick or render around it hardly moves. A sealant that can’t keep up eventually tears.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Rushed sealant from a window installation
  • Cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame
  • Mastic that is falling out in pieces
  • Cold air getting in at the frame edge

Managing a site like Wellington Academy? Then the mastic around its windows and doors needs looking after like any other building’s.

What sealant work cannot fix

We will not take on work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Worn gaskets, brush seals or a door that has dropped
  • Soft or decayed wood in the frame
  • Damp problems in the wall away from the window

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Why act early in Cartsdyke

If you’re painting or rendering, reseal at the same time. Fresh joints finish the job neatly, and it’s easier while the walls are being worked on anyway. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Call for a quick quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Why us?

  • ARBOMaster approved applicator
  • Sealant colour chosen to suit
  • One-year guarantee on every job
  • White, clear, grey or another colour, product permitting

DIY sealant or a professional job?

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We cut it out and start again.
