Remedial sealant in Gremista
Removing failed sealant is the hardest part of the job. We cut out every layer, clear the residue and degrease the surfaces, taking care not to scratch the surfaces around it. Only then can new sealant bond. If you are dealing with sealant applied over old sealant that has lifted and black mould underneath the bead, we can put it right, on shrunken worktop sealant, leaking tray & enclosure joints and failed movement joints alike.
Being further from a city does not change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.
The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything is not right with it, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Gremista: your questions answered
Do you work for hotels and guest houses in Gremista?
Yes, hotels and guest houses are among the places we work. A room-by-room programme keeps most rooms in use while the work goes on.
Is Gremista within the area you cover?
Yes, Gremista is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
I’m a tenant. Can you help?
Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Landlords are often happy for the work to be arranged.
Are you insured?
Yes. We’re fully insured for every job we do.
How long does the work take?
Longer than a simple reseal, because every layer has to come out. For most joints, it’s a few hours, and we confirm the time with your quote.
How long should I leave it?
That depends on the sealant used, so follow the cure time we give you.
What information do you need?
Tell us what needs doing and where, plus photos if you have them. If we need more, we’ll ask.
How much does remedial sealant cost in Gremista?
Size, access and the old material all affect the cost. Call for a quick quote.
How we quote for remedial sealant
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- The number and length of the joints
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- Whether the work is at height
- The old material and how stubborn it is
Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, along with when we can work on site. Ask us for a quote and we will go through it with you.
What we need to know
When you call or email, these details help:
- The problem you’ve noticed
- Roughly how big the job is
- The address or postcode of the job
- Pictures of the joints, sent by email
Getting a quote is simple: let us know what needs doing and where and its rough size. A few photos by email make the job easier to understand, and we will take it from there.
How it works
All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so there’s nothing for you to buy. After a quick look at the joints together, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take a few hours, depending on how many layers have to come out. Outdoor work around Gremista depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.
- First we work out whether the problem is the sealant, movement or a leak.
- Each layer is cut out and the residue cleaned off.
- Mould is treated and the joint dried.
- We reseal with a product suited to the joint, backed where needed.
- The joint is tooled and you are told about anything else we found.
Getting ready for the visit
- Clear items away from the joints we are working on
- Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before

Advice
What the job involves on each surface
Leaking trays & enclosures
When failed joints are the cause, they’re all cut out and renewed, including the screen profile and tray edges.
Windows & doors
A frame that keeps leaking may not be the mastic. We check the joint and tell you if it looks to be something else.

When to call us in Gremista
Silicone only bonds to surfaces that are clean and dry. Residue, moisture or dust left in the joint weaken the bond, and the joint starts to come away early.
The most common problems we see are:
- Worktop sealant that has shrunk and split
- Sealant that came away because the surface wasn’t prepared
- Floor or wall movement joints that have failed
- A shower that leaks however often it’s resealed
If you live in an older home near St Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.
Questions to ask before booking
- What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
- Whether all the old sealant comes out first
- What insurance they hold
- Whether VAT is included
Honest limits
We will always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:
- Tiles that have come away from the wall
- Cracks in the fitting rather than the joint
- A leaking trap, valve or supply pipe
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before booking.
Surfaces we seal
- Mouldy bath & shower sealant
- Shrunken worktop sealant
- Botched or over-sealed joints
- Failed movement joints
- Expansion joints
- Leaking tray & enclosure joints
Aftercare tips
How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:
- Don’t point over movement joints
- Air the bathroom so the sealant can dry
- Get the cause of a repeat leak found before resealing
- Do not wait for a small gap to become a leak
Keep the room ventilated: use the extractor or open a window after showering.
If a joint has failed more than once, stop resealing it. Have someone find out why, otherwise the next attempt will fail too.
Remedial sealant in Gremista: local notes
Gremista is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so give us as much notice as you can.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Anderson High School, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.

Local landmarks in Gremista
Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Gilbertson Park, among other places. Nearby you will also find Montfield Hospital (1.2 miles south) and Shetland Textile Museum (less than half a mile south). Open spaces near Gremista include Loch of Kebister and Setter Hill.
Why deal with it now?
Spraying mould remover on a sealed-over joint doesn’t reach what’s underneath. Removal is the only way to get at it, so the joint can be treated and resealed. Around Gremista, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.
Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.
