About our regrouting in Wormit

Stained, crumbling or cracked grout can make a sound bathroom look tired. Regrouting replaces the grout and keeps the tiles you have, so there’s no stripping out and no new tiles to choose. We work on kitchen splashbacks, bathroom wall tiles and shower walls, and people most often call us about a grout colour that no longer suits the room and stained grout that cleaning won’t shift.

Being further from a city doesn’t change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

Can I do it myself?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

What we do, step by step

We keep the work tidy and contained to the area we’re working on, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area, and we explain the cure time before we leave. Somewhere like Wormit may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
  2. We remove the old grout carefully.
  3. Dust is cleared from every joint.
  4. The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
  5. We renew the silicone at the corners and edges.

How to prepare

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Advice

Why deal with it now?

It’s tempting to fill a few cracks yourself, but the patches often don’t match and the old grout carries on failing. Doing the full area gives you one colour and sound joints throughout. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

There are no prices on our website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll talk you through it.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Good habits help new joints last longer. A few tips:

  • Wipe or squeegee the shower walls
  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
  • Open a window or run the fan to clear steam
  • Use gentle cleaners on grout

Wipe the tiles down after a shower stops soap and water sitting on the grout. Run the extractor fan or open a window so the grout dries between uses.

If grout in the shower is washing out, act soon. Each shower drives water into the open joints, and that water can reach the wall or the floor below.

Do you need regrouting in Wormit?

Most grout is porous, so it soaks up water, soap and dirt. Given time, it discolours and begins to break down and showers that get daily use suffer most.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Old grout in a dated colour
  • Corners filled with grout instead of silicone
  • Good tiles let down by tired grout
  • Kitchen splashback grout stained by grease

For landlords with property near Dundee station, stained grout drags a rental down, and regrouting between lets puts that right.

What sealant work can’t fix

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant won’t put right:

  • A floor or wall that keeps moving
  • Tiles that are loose or hollow behind
  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before you book.

What we seal

  • Shower walls
  • Wet rooms
  • Bathroom floors
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Tiled floors
  • Kitchen splashbacks

Regrouting in Wormit: local notes

Wormit is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.

Schools such as Harris Academy are buildings too, and its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.

Wormit: your questions answered

Will you come out to Wormit?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you cover Wormit for regrouting?

Yes, Wormit is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

What goes in the corners, grout or silicone?

We use silicone in corners and along edges. Grout in a moving joint soon cracks.

Do you regrout part of a bathroom, like the shower?

Yes, that is common. The shower normally fails first, so many people regrout just that part.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. The old sealant has to come out completely.

How long does regrouting take?

A typical job takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, including the preparation. We will confirm how long when we quote.

Which products do you use?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, and we have been doing sealant work for more than 20 years.

Different surfaces, different methods

Bathroom wall tiles

Whole bathroom walls can be regrouted in one visit or more, depending on size. It’s a good time to change the grout colour.

Bathroom floors

Regrouting a floor brightens the whole room. The edges where floor meets wall or bath get silicone.
