- Grout that is cracking and breaking up
What regrouting looks like in Whiterow
Whiterow is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.
Letting a property close to Wick station? Then stained grout drags a rental down, and regrouting between lets puts that right. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Wick High School, washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.
Whiterow is about 19 miles south-east of Thurso, in Highland. From the centre of Whiterow to the outskirts, regrouting is available for homes and businesses alike. Whiterow is one of 253 towns and villages in Highland where we work for regrouting.

About our regrouting in Whiterow
We check the tiles before any grout comes out. If any tiles are loose or sound hollow, we tell you, since new grout can’t fix a problem underneath. With sound tiles, regrouting is a tidy, lasting improvement. We work on bathroom wall tiles, tiled floors and kitchen splashbacks, and common reasons people get in touch are old grout in a dated colour and discoloured grout on otherwise sound tiles.
Being further from a city does not change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.
We guarantee the work for a year. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

The process
Good joint work is mostly preparation, and we don’t rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Around Whiterow, distance and access matter more than parking. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work.
- Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
- The old grout is removed to an even depth.
- We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
- We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
- Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear items away from the joints we are working on
- Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work

DIY sealant or a professional job?
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
Quotes for regrouting in Whiterow
Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:
- The number of rooms or windows
- Whether the work is at height
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, along with when we can work on site. Ask us for a quote and we’ll go through it with you.
What we need to know
A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:
- The rough size of the job
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- The problem you’ve noticed
- If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
We quote each job on its own, so the first step is telling us about yours. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details and send pictures if you have them.
Aftercare tips
Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Wipe or squeegee the shower walls
- Use gentle cleaners on grout
- Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower
- Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
Keep an eye on the silicone in the corners. Corners flex, so the sealant there will need renewing in time, long before the grout does.
Tiles can come away if failed grout is left. By then, new grout alone isn’t enough, so it’s worth acting early.
When to call us in Whiterow
A bathroom that stays damp keeps the grout wet, giving mould a place to grow. Black marks that come back after cleaning are often in the grout itself.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- Old grout in a dated colour
- Greasy, stained grout behind the hob
- Gaps where the shower grout has gone
- Discoloured grout on otherwise sound tiles
In the older streets around Pulteneytown Parish Church, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.
