Aftercare tips

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower
  • Don’t ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Open a window or run the fan to clear steam
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges

Check the corner silicone now and then. Corners flex, so it’s usually the first thing to need attention.

Once grout cracks, it tends to get worse. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away and early regrouting can avoid a much bigger job.

Regrouting in Spott

Across Spott, we regrout tiled showers, bathrooms and kitchens. Out comes the old grout, the joints are cleaned and new grout goes in, and we finish by resealing the edges. Typical jobs include dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor and grout that makes sound tiles look old, across bathroom wall tiles, bathroom floors and kitchen splashbacks.

In and around a place like Spott, homes range from older stone-built properties to newer houses. Where a building moves, cracked grout and split sealant are generally the first signs.

You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Spott homes and their sealant

Spott is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

Around Spott, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it. If you let a flat or house near Dunbar station, stained grout drags a rental down, and regrouting between lets puts that right.

DIY versus a professional finish

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

What we cannot put right

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant will not put right:

  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • Tiles that are loose or hollow behind
  • Cracked or broken tiles

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Surfaces we seal

  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Tiled floors
  • Shower walls
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Bathroom floors
  • Wet rooms

Leave it or put it right?

Grouting over old grout rarely lasts. It sits thinly on top and soon flakes away. Removing the old grout to an even depth lets the new grout key in properly. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

We do not show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote and we will talk you through it.

FAQs for Spott

Do you cover Spott for regrouting?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Spott is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we will give you a clear quote.

Will you come out to Spott?

Yes. Spott is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is resealing included with regrouting?

Yes, in most cases. New grout beside old sealant wouldn’t look right and could still leak.

Is there any odour?

It depends on the product. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little, and any smell fades as they cure.

Is it worth trying it myself?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Yes. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. The old sealant has to come out completely.

Do you grout the corners?

We seal corners with silicone. They flex and grout cannot take that movement.

How the job changes by surface

Shower walls

The grout in a shower takes the brunt of the water. We rake it out and regrout, and reseal the corners.

Kitchen splashbacks

The grout by the hob and sink takes most of the mess. We renew the grout and the worktop sealant.

What happens on the day

You don’t need to clear the whole room or building before we come, just the space around the work. Everything nearby is protected, and the work takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area for a typical job. Around Spott, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • Clear the area around the work
