Regrouting in South Wimbledon

If you’ve been scrubbing grout that will not come clean, the discolouration has normally soaked into the grout. New grout is the fix that lasts, and it’s a chance to change the colour too. If you are dealing with greasy, stained grout behind the hob and crumbling grout between the tiles, we can help, on bathroom floors, tiled floors and bathroom wall tiles alike.

London homes include a lot of flats, conversions and mansion blocks, and many bathrooms sit right above someone else’s ceiling. In South Wimbledon, that is a good reason to put tired sealant and grout right early.

Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by our one-year guarantee in South Wimbledon and across Greater London.

What affects the quote in South Wimbledon

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • Any mould that needs treating
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • The number of rooms or windows
  • Access and height

Combining jobs into one visit usually makes better use of the time than several visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. We’ll give you a clear price for the lot.

What to tell us for a quote

You do not need to know the technical terms. Just tell us:

  • The rough size of the job
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.

How it works

We keep the work tidy and contained to the area we’re working on, so you can carry on as normal. Expect the work to take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room, and we tell you how long to leave it before we go. Many London jobs are in flats, so we come ready for stairs, narrow hallways and shared entrances. If the building has a concierge, managing agent or access rules, tell us when you book.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before

South Wimbledon questions

I let a flat near Wimbledon station. Can you help?

Yes. We work for letting agents and landlords as well as householders. Just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Could a tired shower seal in my South Wimbledon flat affect the neighbours below?

Yes. In a flat, water from a failed bath or shower seal has only one way to go, and that is down. Cutting out the old sealant and laying a new bead early stops it getting that far.

What information do you need?

A short description and the location. If we need more, we’ll ask.

Do you guarantee regrouting?

All our work carries a one-year guarantee, and we’re fully insured.

Does someone need to be in?

Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.

Do you reseal at the same time?

Most of the time, yes. Grout and sealant do different jobs, so both are renewed and it’s all in the quote.

Is regrouting a chance to pick a new grout colour?

Yes. Many clients do. A darker grout hides marks better and lighter grout gives a fresher look.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

We’re a Crawley-based firm. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.

How the job changes by surface

Kitchen splashbacks

Grout behind the hob and sink works hard. We renew the grout and the worktop sealant.

Bathroom wall tiles

Grout by the basin and bath tends to mark first. We can do part of a wall or all of it.

Common problems we fix in South Wimbledon

A bathroom that stays damp keeps the grout wet, and damp grout is where mould grows. When black spots keep returning, the mould has normally got into the grout.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Grout washed out of a shower
  • Grout stained black or orange that will not clean
  • Crumbling grout between the tiles
  • Cracked grout along the bath or tray

In the older streets around Holy Trinity, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Choosing a sealant specialist

Should I try it myself first?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Why it’s worth doing now in South Wimbledon

It’s tempting to fill a few cracks yourself, but patched grout rarely matches the rest and the old grout carries on failing. Regrouting the whole area gives an even, lasting finish. Converted houses in London often have a bathroom above someone else’s living room, and a slow leak from a failed seal can end up in the flat below. Putting it right early is much less trouble.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

How to look after the new joints

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Have loose tiles looked at early
  • Look at the sealant in the corners now and then
  • Skip wire brushes and scourers
  • Give the walls a quick rinse after use

Leave the area unused for as long as we advise, so it cures fully. After that, rinse the tiles after showering and keep the room ventilated.

Stains that will not clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. At this point it’s a simple regrout, before the joints open up.
