Regrouting in Shiel Bridge

Regrouting in Shiel Bridge

Our applicators rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care not to chip the tile edges. The joints are then vacuumed, regrouted and cleaned off, and the corners get fresh silicone. We work on tiled floors, bathroom wall tiles and wet rooms, and the jobs we see most are floor grout that has worn and darkened and crumbling grout between the tiles.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Shiel Bridge work just as hard as those in the cities. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

Every job comes with a 12-month guarantee, wherever you are in Highland.

How the job changes by surface

Corners and edges

Where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop, the joint is sealed. Grout in that joint wouldn’t last.

Shower walls

Showers put more water on grout than anywhere else. We rake it out and regrout and renew the silicone at the edges.

What we do, step by step

We bring everything the job needs with us, so you do not need to buy or prepare anything. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. It normally takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Somewhere like Shiel Bridge may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Advice

How to look after the new joints

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:

  • Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower
  • Have loose tiles looked at early
  • Use gentle cleaners on grout
  • Do not use strong acidic cleaners on grout

Leave the area unused for as long as we advise, so it can harden properly. After that, rinse the tiles after showering and let the room air.

Stains that won’t clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. At this point it’s a simple regrout while the tiles are still sound.

Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Shiel Bridge has hotels and guest accommodation nearby. Hotel bathrooms are part of our work as well as homes, and can be done room by room.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so the work can be planned room by room. Hotel work is part of what we do, alongside homes and businesses.

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s quick to put right between tenancies. Several properties can go on one quote.

What affects the quote in Shiel Bridge

The price is agreed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • The number and length of the joints
  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • Whether the work is at height
  • The type of sealant required

There are no prices on our website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will talk you through it.

What to tell us for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • Roughly how big the job is

Getting a quote is simple: let us know what needs doing and where and its rough size. A few photos by email make the job easier to understand, and we will take it from there.

Do you need regrouting in Shiel Bridge?

Movement behind the tiles cracks grout. That can be a loose tile, a flexing floor or a stud wall, which is why we check the tiles first.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Kitchen splashback grout stained by grease
  • Gaps where the shower grout has gone
  • Floor grout that has worn and darkened
  • Crumbling grout between the tiles

Around Shiel Bridge, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

10 questions to ask before you book

DIY sealant or a professional job?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
