Regrouting in Port Ellen, done properly
Changing the grout colour is a simple way to update tiles. Light grout can go darker to hide marks, or the other way round. Just mention the colour you’d like when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk. If you have greasy, stained grout behind the hob and dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor, we can put it right, on tiled floors, bathroom floors and shower walls alike.
A bathroom in a place like Port Ellen gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.
All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months.

When something else is needed
Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:
- A leaking wet room membrane
- Cracked or broken tiles
- A leaking shower valve or waste
Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

About regrouting
How it works
Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we don’t rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Outdoor work around Port Ellen depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors is not affected.
- We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
- We remove the old grout carefully.
- The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
- The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
- We renew the silicone at the corners and edges.
Before we arrive
- Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
- Mention any tricky access
- Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
Ask for a quote
Getting a quote is simple: tell us what needs doing and where, and roughly how big it is. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we’ll come back to you with a quote.
Advice
How to look after the new joints
Aftercare is simple:
- Keep the fan on after showering
- Skip wire brushes and scourers
- Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout
- Wipe or squeegee the shower walls
Before we leave, you’ll know when the shower can be used. Please follow it, and avoid scrubbing the new grout hard for the first few days.
Small problems with grout are quick to put right. Left, the same problem can let water through, so get it looked at when you notice it.
Your questions about regrouting in Port Ellen
Is there a guarantee on regrouting in Port Ellen?
Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We’re fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Do you cover Port Ellen for regrouting?
Yes, Port Ellen is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.
Can I do it myself?
Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.
Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status.
Do you grout the corners?
Corners get silicone, not grout. They flex and grout cannot take that movement.
How long does the job take?
A typical job takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, including preparation and clearing up. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.
Can you work on commercial sites?
Yes. We work in offices, washrooms, hotels and other commercial premises. Working times can be discussed when we quote.
Are you insured?
Yes. Full insurance covers our work.
When to call us in Port Ellen
Grout that was put in corners cracks as the bath or tray moves. They need flexible sealant, and if they’re grouted, a crack soon lets water in.
The most common problems we see are:
- Grout that’s cracking and breaking up
- Grout stained black or orange that won’t clean
- Good tiles let down by tired grout
- Old grout in a dated colour
For an older house near a landmark such as St John's Church (Port Ellen), walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.
What your quote should include
- What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
- What preparation is included
- How long to leave it before use
- Who turns up on the day
Quotes for regrouting in Port Ellen
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
- The type of sealant required
- When we can work, for business premises
- How many areas need sealing
Instead of a standard rate, we price the job in front of us: the amount of work, the old material and the access. You will know the price before we begin.
Helping us quote
To make quoting easier, let us know:
- The problem you’ve noticed
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
- Whether it’s a home or a business
- The address or postcode of the job
Every job is quoted individually. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details and send pictures if you have them.
For landlords and businesses
Letting agents and landlords in Port Ellen can book us as well as homeowners. Sealant work between tenants is a simple way to keep a property in good order before the next move-in.
Mouldy or split sealant often shows up at the end of a tenancy, and it’s quick to put right between tenancies. Several properties can be quoted together.
Surface by surface
Kitchen splashbacks
The grout by the hob and sink takes most of the mess. We regroute and reseal the worktop joint.
Bathroom wall tiles
Grout by the basin and bath tends to mark first. We can do part of a wall or all of it.
What regrouting looks like in Port Ellen
Port Ellen is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.
In and around Port Ellen, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
