Gutter sealing in Port Ellen, done properly

A lot of gutter leaks come down to one tired joint. We clean out the joint, dry it and reseal it using a gutter sealant. If the gutter itself has failed, we say so. We’re often asked to deal with old sealant on roofline trims that has split and internal damp traced to a gutter joint, on garage door frames, gutter joints and uPVC fascias.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Should I try it myself first?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

Quotes for gutter sealing in Port Ellen

You will get a clear quote before any work starts. It’s based on:

  • The size of the job
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • Access and height
  • The product the joint needs

We don’t show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will talk you through it.

Asking for a quote

When you contact us, these details help:

  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • What’s wrong with the joints now

For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or email us if that is easier. Describe what needs sealing and we’ll talk you through the work before giving you a price.

What happens on the day

All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so you don’t need to buy or prepare anything. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take anything from an hour or two to a few hours. Outdoor work around Port Ellen depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We find where the water is coming from and check the gutter is sound.
  2. We remove the old sealant and clean the joint.
  3. We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
  4. We seal the joint with a sealant made for gutters.
  5. The gutter is checked and debris around the joints cleared.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

Why deal with it now?

A dripping gutter joint keeps wetting the same patch of wall. Over time that can stain brickwork, mark render and encourage damp, so it’s worth sealing early. Around Port Ellen, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

What it costs depends on the size of the job, how hard the old material is to remove and how easy the joints are to reach. We give a clear quote before we start.

Aftercare tips

A little care helps the new joints last. We recommend:

  • Look at the gutters while it’s raining
  • Keep downpipes clear
  • Look for streaks or damp on the wall below gutters
  • Check fascia and soffit joints for gaps

Have a look at the gutter during a downpour. Drips are easiest to spot while it’s raining.

If an end cap is dripping, deal with it before winter. Water down the wall all winter can cause damp.

Walls and rooflines in Port Ellen

Port Ellen is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, especially on the side facing the sea. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for gutter, fascia and roofline joints to keep out.

In and around Port Ellen, as anywhere, good gutter sealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Do you need gutter sealing in Port Ellen?

Debris in the gutter keeps water sitting at the joints. Standing water finds the weakest joint and drips through.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Cracked sealant along roofline trims
  • Leaking gutter joints and stop ends
  • Failed sealant on a garage door frame
  • Damp patches inside below a leaking gutter

If you live in an older home near St John's Church (Port Ellen), the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Common questions in Port Ellen

Can you do gutter sealing in Port Ellen?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Port Ellen is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Will you come out to Port Ellen?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Will sealing fix a sagging gutter?

It will not last. The joint will pull apart, so the fall and brackets need sorting first.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No. Fresh sealant doesn’t stick to old sealant, and anything trapped underneath, including mould and water, stays there. It all has to come out first.

Can I do it myself?

Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.

When is the sealant fully cured?

Most sealants are touch-dry well before they’re fully cured. We’ll give you the cure time for the product we used before we leave.

Is sealing fascia joints something you do?

Yes, often alongside gutter joints. Each joint is cleaned and sealed with a suitable exterior sealant.

Is the work guaranteed?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, and we are fully insured.
