About our regrouting in Gauldry

Across Gauldry, we regrout tiled showers, bathrooms and kitchens. The old grout is raked out, the joints cleaned and new grout laid, finished with new silicone at the edges. If you have floor grout that has worn and darkened and discoloured grout on otherwise sound tiles, we can put it right, on kitchen splashbacks, shower walls and bathroom wall tiles alike.

Being further from a city does not change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee.

Gauldry: your questions answered

Can you do regrouting in Gauldry?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Gauldry is part of that. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Do you work for landlords with property near Dundee station?

Yes, we work for landlords and letting agents. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and a few details, and we’ll give you a fixed price before work begins.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, it will not last. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

Will there be a smell?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure, but it fades. Opening a window helps.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes, regularly. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. ARBOMaster is the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants, and we are part of it.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, every time. New sealant won’t bond properly to old, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Do you grout the corners?

Flexible sealant. Grout is for the joints between tiles and moving joints need sealant.

How the job changes by surface

Kitchen splashbacks

A splashback can be regrouted without touching the worktop. The joint along the worktop is resealed with silicone.

Bathroom floors

Floor grout takes foot traffic as well as water. It wears and darkens over time.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Open a window or run the fan to clear steam
  • Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
  • Check the corner silicone every few months
  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering

Wipe the tiles down after a shower keeps water off the grout. Run the extractor fan or open a window so the grout dries between uses.

Grout that’s washing out of a shower shouldn’t be left. Every shower pushes more water into the gaps and it can end up in the wall or the ceiling below.

Gauldry homes and their sealant

Gauldry is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.

If you live in an older home near Gauldry Parish Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Why it’s worth doing now in Gauldry

Grouting over old grout rarely lasts. A thin skin on top tends to break off, taking any repair with it. Raking out to a consistent depth gives the new grout something to hold. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Call for a quick quote and we will explain what it covers.

How it works

When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Somewhere like Gauldry may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First, we check for loose or hollow tiles and point out any we find.
  2. Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
  3. Dust and debris are vacuumed out of every joint.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

Preparing for the visit

What we can’t put right

We will not take on work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Tiles that are chipped or split
  • Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles
  • Tiles that are loose or hollow behind

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before you book.

DIY versus a professional finish

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

When to call us in Gauldry

Hard water and soap leave a film on grout and stick to it. The grout beneath can stain and weaken, and at that point, new grout is the better answer.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Cracked grout along the bath or tray
  • Stained grout that cleaning won’t shift
  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • A grout colour that no longer suits the room

Letting a property close to Dundee station? Then a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.
