Regrouting in Dewartown
A grout colour change can freshen a room without retiling. You might go from white to grey or back again. Tell us what you have in mind when you ask for a quote. If you’re dealing with grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned and grout in a colour the owner wants to change, we can help, on shower walls, bathroom wall tiles and kitchen splashbacks alike.
Being further from a city doesn’t change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.
The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

How the visit works
Once we are on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. In smaller Scottish places, parking is usually less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work.
- First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
- We remove the old grout carefully.
- Dust is cleared from every joint.
- The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
- Internal corners and edges are resealed.
Getting ready for the visit

Dewartown: your questions answered
I let a flat near Gorebridge station. Can you help?
Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as householders. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and what needs doing, and we will give you a clear quote.
Is Dewartown within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
What sealant do you use?
It depends on the joint: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.
Is resealing included with regrouting?
In most cases, yes. Corners and edges need flexible silicone and doing both at once leaves everything sound.
Can I do it myself?
That depends on the joint. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional.
Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?
Yes, that’s common. Shower grout tends to go before the rest, so it’s often the only area that needs doing.
Is regrouting a chance to pick a new grout colour?
Yes. Because the old grout is raked out, the new colour goes all the way into the joint, not just the surface.
Do you grout the corners?
We seal corners with silicone. They move slightly, and grout there cracks.

Dewartown homes and their sealant
Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.
Rented homes near Gorebridge station change hands often, and stained grout drags a rental down, and regrouting between lets puts that right.

Leave it or put it right?
With regrouting, your tiles stay where they are. Retiling means stripping the walls, making good and choosing new tiles, and often a few days without a shower. If the tiles are sound, regrouting is the simpler fix. Around Dewartown, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.
Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Call for a quick quote and we will go through it with you.

When something else is needed
Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant will not do:
- Tiles that have come away from the wall
- Tiles that are chipped or split
- Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles
Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
Surfaces we seal
- Kitchen splashbacks
- Shower walls
- Bathroom wall tiles
- Tiled floors
- Bathroom floors
- Wet rooms
Different surfaces, different methods
Shower walls
Showers put more water on grout than anywhere else. We replace it and renew the silicone at the edges.
Kitchen splashbacks
Kitchen grout collects grease and food splashes. Stained grout is best replaced.
How to look after the new joints
How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
- Give the walls a quick rinse after use
- Get any tile that moves checked promptly
- Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout
Keep an eye on the silicone in the corners. It’s the part that moves, so it’s usually the first thing to need attention.
Once grout cracks, it tends to get worse. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away and early regrouting can avoid a much bigger job.
Common problems we fix in Dewartown
A bathroom that stays damp keeps the grout wet, giving mould a place to grow. Black marks that come back after cleaning are often in the grout itself.
It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:
- Greasy, stained grout behind the hob
- Floor grout that has worn and darkened
- Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned
- A grout colour that no longer suits the room
Schools such as Newbattle Community High School are buildings too, and washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.
What to look for in a quote
- How long to leave it before use
- Are they insured?
- How hidden problems are handled
- Is the old sealant removed completely?
