About bathroom resealing in DG4
Showers work their sealant harder than baths. Tray edges, screen profiles and wet room joints all rely on silicone to stay watertight. Each gets a bead of anti-fungal sanitary silicone, finished smooth so water drains away rather than collecting. Typical jobs include black mould in the silicone that won’t clean off and leaks into the floor or ceiling below, on baths, wet rooms and basins & vanity units.
When we arrive, we look over the joints with you first, so you know exactly what we are doing. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work starts. The work usually takes a couple of hours for a single bath or shower.
- First, each joint is checked for movement and signs of water.
- Every trace of the old bead is removed, including the thin smear on the tiles.
- The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
- When the joint is dry, and a bath has been filled with water, the new silicone goes on.
- We tool the bead to a neat finish and give you the cure time, usually around 24 hours.

Bathrooms and kitchens across DG4
Homes across DG4 range from older properties to new builds, with plenty of rented property in places like Kirkconnel, Sanquhar and Kelloholm. Bathroom resealing keeps bathrooms and kitchens watertight and looking cared for.
We work across all of Scotland, from the cities to the islands, and DG4 is part of that. Longer journeys are planned in advance, and outdoor work around the weather.
Kirkconnel: Around Kirkconnel, as everywhere, bathroom resealing is only as good as the preparation behind it. If you let a flat or house near Kirkconnel station, fresh sealant around the bath, shower and sink between tenancies helps a property present well and keeps leaks at bay.

How the job changes by surface
Kitchen worktops & upstands
Worktop joints get wet and wiped every day. The new bead is colour-matched where it shows.
Baths
Baths move more than any other fitting, so it’s filled with water before the bead goes on. That way the joint is laid with the bath at its heaviest and is not torn the first time it’s used.
Signs you need bathroom resealing
A bath shifts a little every time it’s filled and emptied. An acrylic bath flexes under load, and a tray that is not fully bedded can rock. Over time the joint tears or pulls away from the tile.
Any of these means the joints need attention:
- Black spots spreading through the bead
- Two layers of silicone, both failing
- Cracked, shrunken or lifting silicone
- Shrunken sealant along the back of a worktop
Aftercare tips
Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:
- Open a window or run the fan so the room dries
- Stick to a soft cloth and a mild cleaner
- Dry worktop joints after washing up
- Keep an eye on the corners, where splits start
Keep water off the new bead until it has cured, which is normally around 24 hours. Once it’s cured, wiping it down after use keeps it looking new.
A few black dots in the silicone soon become a black line. When it has grown right through, it rarely cleans out. Catching it early keeps it a simple reseal.
Why deal with it now?
Dealing with sealant early is a short job: the work takes a morning or an afternoon for most single baths and showers. Wait for a leak and you may be looking at panels off, drying out and redecorating too.

FAQs for DG4
Do you take out the old sealant first?
Yes, always, and completely. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so the joint is cleaned back first.
Is it messy?
We keep the work tidy. Nearby surfaces are protected, and we clear up when we’re done.
My sealant has gone black. Can you sort it?
Yes, we can. We strip the bead, treat the joint and lay new anti-fungal silicone.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes. We work in offices, washrooms, hotels and other commercial premises, as well as homes. Working times can be discussed when we quote.
Do you work in DG4?
Yes. We cover DG4 and the rest of Dumfries and Galloway. For a quote, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Is there any odour?
Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Ventilation helps.
Can you just seal over the old silicone?
No. Fresh silicone can’t stick to the old bead, so it peels away and hides mould and water. We always take the old sealant out completely.
