Gutter sealing in Queensferry

Gutter sealing in Queensferry

A drip at a gutter joint is easy to ignore, but the water lands on the same spot every time it rains. Resealing it is a small job while the gutter is still sound. We are often asked to deal with open joints in fascias and soffits and water dripping where gutter sections meet, on roofline trims, soffit joints and uPVC fascias.

External sealant needs dry surfaces, so outdoor work around Queensferry is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job.

How we quote for gutter sealing

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • How much there is to do
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • The type of sealant required

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • If someone has resealed it before
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • The address or postcode of the job

Want a quote for gutter sealing? Please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details. We’ll explain what we’d do and give you a clear quote before work begins.

How the visit works

A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, carry out the job and clear up. It usually takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Outside jobs in Queensferry need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We look at where the water is coming from and check the gutter isn’t broken or sagging.
  2. Old sealant and dirt are removed from the joint.
  3. The area is dried so the sealant can bond.
  4. An exterior or gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. We check the run and clear any debris we find while we are there.

Before we arrive

  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • Let us know about parking restrictions

Ask for a quote

Asking for a quote is easy: let us know what needs doing and where, and roughly how big it is. A few photos by email make the job easier to understand, and we’ll come back to you with a quote.

Do you need gutter sealing in Queensferry?

Gutter joints depend on seals that wear out. Sun and cold make the gutter expand and contract, and old seals crack or slip.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Rain getting in around a garage door
  • Internal damp traced to a gutter joint
  • Leaking gutter joints and stop ends
  • Old sealant on roofline trims that has split

Managing a site like Queensferry High School? Then movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

What to look for in a quote

  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • How much experience the applicator has
  • How the colour is chosen
  • Are they insured?

Choosing a sealant specialist

When it isn’t the sealant

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • A gutter length that has split
  • Problems with the roof covering
  • Rotten or damaged fascia boards

If you are not sure, just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Surfaces we seal

  • Gutter joints
  • Garage door frames
  • Soffit joints
  • Gutter end caps
  • Roofline trims
  • uPVC fascias

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Check that water runs out of the downpipes
  • Keep ladders off the guttering
  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly
  • Clean out the gutters once or twice a year

Keep the gutters clear of leaves and moss so water doesn’t sit on the joints. Standing water strains every seal.

A leaking stop end is best sealed before the wet months. Water down the wall all winter can cause damp.

FAQs for Queensferry

Will you come out to Queensferry?

Yes. Queensferry is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Dalmeny station?

Yes, we work for letting agents and landlords. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we’ll give you a clear price.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No. New silicone will not bond to old silicone, and it traps any mould or water underneath. We remove it all first.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Queensferry and the rest of Edinburgh.

Does someone need to be in?

We need access to the joints, so we will agree that with you when we book. Indoors, that usually means someone at home.

Are you insured?

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, and we have been doing sealant work for more than 20 years.

Do you offer different sealant colours?

In most cases you can choose. We’ll explain which colours are available and agree one before any work starts.

Do you clean gutters?

We clean the joints we are sealing and clear debris we find nearby. A full gutter clean is a separate service.

Gutter sealing in Queensferry: local notes

Queensferry is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that.

In the older streets around Queensferry Parish Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain. Letting a property close to Dalmeny station? Then a gutter joint that drips onto the wall can turn into a damp complaint, so it’s worth checking.

Why act early in Queensferry

Replacing guttering is a much bigger job than sealing joints. Where the gutter is in good order and only a joint leaks a reseal is all it needs. If it’s broken or sagging, a gutter installer needs to look. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
