Gutter sealing in Falkirk

Can I do it myself?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Gutter sealing for homes and businesses in Falkirk

Gutter and fascia replacement is not our trade, and nor is roofing. What sealant does is close joints and it can’t mend broken brackets, split sections or blocked downpipes. If you are dealing with internal damp traced to a gutter joint and gaps along fascia and soffit joints, we can put it right, whatever the surface.

Scottish weather is hard on outside joints, and a town like Falkirk gets its share of wind and rain. A gap in a gutter joint, fascia trim or wall joint soon lets damp in.

The process

There’s no need to move everything out, just the space around the work. We protect the rest, and the job takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access in most cases. For a job in Falkirk, tell us where the work is, how to get in and where to park. Outside work depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface.

  1. We look at where the water is coming from and check the gutter isn’t broken or sagging.
  2. Old sealant and dirt are removed from the joint.
  3. We make sure the joint is dry before sealing.
  4. An exterior or gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. We look along the gutter and clear debris around the joints.

Preparing for the visit

  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints

Advice

What the job involves on each surface

uPVC fascias

Open fascia joints look untidy and can let water in. A neat bead closes them up.

Gutter end caps

Drips from a stop end run down the brickwork. It’s a small job to fix.

When it isn’t the sealant

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Sagging gutters or broken brackets
  • Downpipes that are blocked or broken
  • Boards that have decayed or split

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before you book.

Where we work in Falkirk

  • uPVC fascias
  • Garage door frames
  • Soffit joints
  • Gutter joints
  • Roofline trims
  • Gutter end caps

Keeping the joints in good condition

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:

  • Keep downpipes clear
  • Look along the fascias for open joints
  • Rest ladders on the wall, not the gutter
  • Look at the gutters while it’s raining

Make sure downpipes aren’t blocked so the gutter can drain. Blockages push water back along the gutter.

Once roofline sealant splits, water can get behind it. Resealing early protects the boards and the wall below.

Questions from Falkirk

Do you work for landlords with property near Falkirk Grahamston station?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can go on one quote. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details for a clear quote.

Is gutter sealing in Falkirk guaranteed?

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever it is. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Can sealant stop a sagging gutter leaking?

Not on its own. A sagging gutter pulls its joints apart so it needs refixing before sealing.

Does someone need to be in?

Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.

What do you put in the joint?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, chosen to suit the joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Is gutter cleaning part of the job?

We clear debris around the joints we’re sealing. Full gutter cleaning is a separate job.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Of course. Doing several areas at once is generally more efficient.

What information do you need?

Where the job is, what the problem is and roughly how big it is. If you can, email a few pictures.

What happens if it’s left?

A dripping stop end can soak the wall right through the wet months. Resealing it is a quick job compared with treating damp later. If you live in a flat in Falkirk, failed sealant can send water to the neighbours below, which turns a small job into a bigger one.

Doing several joints on one visit usually makes better use of the time than several visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. You will get one clear quote for the whole job.

Walls and rooflines in Falkirk

Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

For landlords with property near Falkirk Grahamston station, a dripping gutter joint or loose fascia trim is easy to miss until damp shows inside. If you live in an older home near St. Francis Xavier's Roman Catholic Church, older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Comely Park School, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.

What affects the cost of gutter sealing

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • The number and length of the joints
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • How easy the joints are to reach

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

Asking for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • If someone has resealed it before
  • The address or postcode of the job

For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or send an email if you’d rather. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we’ll talk you through the work before giving you a price.
