Gutter sealing in Ettrickbridge

How we handle gutter sealing in Ettrickbridge

Sealant only bonds to a clean, dry joint. That is why we take out the old sealant and dirt first and the joint is dried before the new sealant goes in. We work on soffit joints, uPVC fascias and gutter joints, and the jobs we see most are water dripping where gutter sections meet and end caps that drip every time it rains.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We cut it out and start again, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

When it is not the sealant

Sealant isn’t the answer to every problem, and we’ll tell you before we start. It will not solve:

  • Brackets that have snapped or loosened
  • Blocked downpipes
  • A gutter length that has split

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before you book.

What we seal

  • Roofline trims
  • Gutter joints
  • uPVC fascias
  • Soffit joints
  • Gutter end caps
  • Garage door frames

Ettrickbridge questions

Is there a guarantee on gutter sealing in Ettrickbridge?

All our work, in Ettrickbridge and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Is Ettrickbridge within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Can you fit new guttering?

That’s not something we do. We seal joints and replacement is a job for an installer.

Can you work on commercial sites?

Yes. We can plan bigger jobs in stages.

How long does gutter sealing take?

Typically it takes anything from an hour or two to a few hours. Larger jobs naturally take longer, and we will say how long yours will take.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

Yes. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.

Should I try DIY first?

It depends on the job. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

Is sealing fascia joints something you do?

Yes, often alongside gutter joints. Each joint is cleaned and sealed.

What happens if it’s left?

A new garage door isn’t needed for a leaking frame. Sealing the frame normally stops it. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

What it costs depends on the amount of work, how hard the old material is to remove and how easy the joints are to reach. We give a clear quote before work begins, so you know where you stand.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Looking after new joints is easy, and it makes a real difference:

  • Keep downpipes clear
  • Watch the wall under the gutters for staining
  • Rest ladders on the wall, not the gutter
  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly

If a gutter starts to sag, get the brackets looked at. Movement will pull the joints open again.

A leaking stop end is best sealed before the wet months. A winter of drips can lead to damp patches inside.

Ettrickbridge buildings and the weather

Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that. With historic houses such as Bowhill House (about 3.1 miles north-east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Ettrickbridge as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.

Homes close to Ettrickbridge Church include some older properties, and an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

How the visit works

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we will take it from there. The work itself takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access from start to finish. Around Ettrickbridge, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We find where the water is coming from and check the gutter is sound.
  2. We remove the old sealant and clean the joint.
  3. We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
  4. A gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. We check the run and clear debris near the joints.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints

Signs you need gutter sealing in Ettrickbridge

Debris in the gutter keeps water sitting at the joints. Water that can’t drain works its way through a weak joint and drips through.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Fascia boards with gaps between them
  • Earlier gutter repairs that have peeled off
  • Leaking gutter joints and stop ends
  • Trim joints where the sealant has failed

Around Ettrickbridge, as everywhere, gutter sealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.
