Trusted glazing silicone in Tripwell

Should I try it myself first?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

About our glazing silicone in Tripwell

Frameless shower screens rely on sealant to keep water in. Leaks generally come from the wall joint or the tray joint and both get fresh anti-fungal silicone. We work on glass-to-frame joints, glass balustrade bases and glass-to-glass joints, and people most often call us about conservatory leaks at frame and glazing joints and water running down inside the glass.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses, many standing in the open. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, in Tripwell and everywhere else we cover.

What the job involves on each surface

Glass balustrade bases

We reseal the joint where the glass meets the base channel. Glass fitting is a separate trade.

Glass-to-frame joints

Glass-to-frame joints need a sealant that bonds to both. We choose a product that suits both.

Honest limits

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant will not put right:

  • Glass that needs replacing
  • Condensation trapped between two panes
  • Structural problems with a conservatory roof

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.

Aftercare tips

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. Our tips:

  • Keep scrapers and blades away from the silicone
  • Use a gentle glass cleaner and a soft cloth
  • Use gentle products around the joints
  • Keep air moving in the conservatory

Gentle products are best near the sealant. Strong solvents can soften or mark it.

Damp patches, drips and condensation along a joint are worth checking. It may be sealant, or something else, and we’ll tell you which.

How we quote for glazing silicone

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • How much there is to do
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved

Doing several joints on one visit is generally more efficient than separate visits. You will get one clear quote for the whole job.

What we need to know

To make quoting easier, please include:

  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • Where the property is
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • The problem you’ve noticed

It all starts with a short chat. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is, and we will talk you through what we’d do. When it suits you, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we look over the joints with you first, so you know exactly what we’re doing. Surfaces next to the work are protected before any work begins. The work usually takes anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job. Outside jobs in Tripwell need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First, we check where the water gets in.
  2. The failed silicone is cut out without marking the glass or frame.
  3. The joint is cleaned and degreased.
  4. A neutral-cure glazing silicone is applied and tooled.
  5. We check the finished joints and test with water where it’s safe.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Can you do glazing silicone in Tripwell?

Do I need to be at home?

If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. Once we have agreed the job, you do not need to watch us work.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes. We work for householders, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels across the Shetland Islands.

How long before the joint can be used?

Most sealants are touch-dry well before they’re fully cured. We’ll tell you how long to leave the joint.

Can you reseal the base of a glass balustrade?

We can, if the base joint is sealed. Send us photos and we’ll take a look when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Which silicone is used for glass joints?

Glass needs a sealant made for glazing. We use neutral-cure glazing silicone with anti-fungal products in bathrooms.

Is it worth trying it myself?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

Frames and glazing around Tripwell

Tripwell is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. On the islands, wind and salt spray are hard on outside sealant.

For an older house near a landmark such as Whalsay Parish Church, the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall. Around Tripwell, as everywhere, glazing silicone is only as good as the preparation behind it.
