Glazing silicone in Symbister
Across Symbister, we reseal glazing joints in homes, offices and hotels. From conservatories to shower screens, it’s the same careful method. If you’re dealing with water tracking down the inner face of the glass and leaks from the base of a shower screen, we can put it right, whatever the surface.
Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Symbister depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

What happens on the day
You don’t need to clear the whole room or building before we come, only the area right around the joints. Everything nearby is protected, and the job takes a few hours for most jobs for a typical job. Somewhere like Symbister may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- First we agree the joints to be done.
- We cut away the failed silicone.
- The surfaces are cleaned with a suitable solvent.
- New glazing silicone goes in and is finished neatly.
- The joints are checked before we leave.
How to prepare
- For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in

DIY sealant or a professional job?
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.
Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.
Aftercare tips
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Avoid strong solvents on or near the sealant
- Open vents or windows to let moisture out
- Clear the conservatory gutters regularly
- Check the silicone on glass every year or so
Gentle products are best near the sealant. Strong solvents can soften or mark it.
Damp patches, drips and condensation along a joint are worth checking. It may be sealant, or something else and we will find out which.
What we cannot put right
New sealant can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:
- Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (a failed unit for a glazier)
- Structural problems with a conservatory roof
- Water coming through the roof rather than a sealant joint
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

When to call us in Symbister
New silicone over old silicone will not bond. Plenty of leaks come from a quick top-up over the old bead, and water gets between the layers.
Common reasons people contact us include:
- Glazing silicone that has cracked or come away
- Water escaping where a screen meets the wall
- Leaking glazing joints on a rooflight
- Water running down inside the glass
For jobs in and around Symbister, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.
What to look for in a quote
- What happens if the job turns out different
- How the colour is chosen
- How long to leave it before use
- Who turns up on the day
Different surfaces, different methods
Conservatory frames
Frame-to-wall joints on a conservatory move with the weather. We reseal them with a sealant suited to the frame.
Glass-to-frame joints
Old sealant is removed carefully from the glass and reseal with glazing silicone.

Glazing silicone in Symbister: local notes
Symbister is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on glazing joints and frame seals, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Island jobs need planning around ferries and the weather, so the more notice, the better.
In and around Symbister, as anywhere, good glazing silicone starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
Symbister is in the Shetland Islands. From the centre of Symbister to the outskirts, we cover glazing silicone for every kind of property. Symbister is one of 63 towns and villages in the Shetland Islands where we work.
We cover every part of ZE2 for glazing silicone. Glazing silicone is available to properties on Rocky Road, Saeter and North Gardentown and the roads around them. We also cover the places around Symbister: Sandwick (1 mile south-west), Clate (1 mile south), Hamister (1 mile north), Huxter (1 mile east) and Tripwell (1 mile north-east). Further out, we also cover Lerwick (14 miles south), Sound (15 miles south) and Brae (12 miles west). Remote and island addresses need a little more planning, so please mention your location when you email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

FAQs for Symbister
Can you do glazing silicone in Symbister?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Symbister is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will give you a clear quote.
Does living near the coast affect glazing silicone in Symbister?
Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.
Do you reseal glass shower screens?
Yes. We remove the old sealant and reseal the wall and tray joints.
Do you take out the old sealant first?
Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint.
Why not top up the existing silicone?
It does not last. Fresh silicone will not bond to cured silicone so we take it all out and start clean.
Which silicone is used for glass joints?
A neutral-cure glazing silicone that suits the glass and frame. Shower screens get anti-fungal silicone.
Do you offer different sealant colours?
In most cases you can choose. We’ll tell you which colours the right product comes in.
Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator and we are fully insured too.
