Aaron's Hill: your questions answered
Do you take on hotel work around Aaron's Hill?
Yes. Hotel and guest-house work is part of what we do. Jobs can be programmed room by room, with out-of-hours working possible to arrange.
Will you come out to Aaron's Hill?
Yes. Aaron's Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Do you remove the old sealant?
Yes, always, and completely. New silicone does not stick to old silicone, so the joint is cleaned back first.
What does intumescent mean?
Fire-rated sealant covers any sealant tested for use in fire stopping. Intumescent ones swell in heat, and they’re one of the options. The specification and the tested detail decide which is used.
Can I choose the sealant colour?
In most cases you can choose. We’ll explain which colours are available and agree one before any work starts.
Do I need to be at home?
It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.
Can you tell me which gaps need fire stopping?
No. Your fire risk assessor, designer or building control decides that. Our job is applying the sealant to their specification.
Is it messy?
Tidy work is part of the job. Nearby surfaces are protected, and we clear up when we are done.
Looking after it afterwards
A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:
- Don’t fill fire-stopping gaps with ordinary foam or silicone
- Keep pictures of seals that will be hidden
- Keep the record of products and locations with your fire safety documents
- Get damaged fire seals looked at promptly
Include fire stopping in your regular building checks. Look for cracks, gaps or sealant that has been cut or pulled out and have them put right.
When you plan work that goes through walls or ceilings, plan the fire stopping too. Doing it at the time avoids leaving gaps behind.
How the job changes by surface
Flats and HMOs
Flats and HMOs rely on fire separation between homes and the common parts. We work through the gaps on your assessment room by room.
Door frames
Frame gaps are usually hidden behind the architrave. We seal any open gap to the product’s tested details so the architrave can be refitted.
Signs you need fire rated sealant in Aaron's Hill
A lot of fire stopping is out of sight: above ceilings, inside risers and behind panels. Out of view, damage sits unnoticed until someone inspects.
People usually contact us after spotting something like this:
- New service routes left unsealed after building work
- Gaps where walls meet ceilings or slabs
- Joints picked up in a fire-stopping survey
- Unsealed gaps around fire door frames
Letting a property close to Godalming station? Then new cables or pipes through a fire-resisting wall leave a gap that needs the right sealant.

The process
All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so you do not need to buy or prepare anything. After a quick look at the joints together, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take from a few hours to a few days, depending on the number of gaps and the access. A visit to Aaron's Hill is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Outdoor jobs depend on a dry day, since sealant needs a dry surface.
- Access to each area is agreed so the work can run in order.
- Old, damaged or unsuitable sealant is removed.
- Gaps are cleaned of dust and loose material.
- The fire-rated or intumescent sealant is applied and tooled to the tested detail.
- Locations and products are written up and any gaps unsuitable for sealant are flagged.
Getting ready for the visit

DIY sealant or a professional job?
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
What fire rated sealant looks like in Aaron's Hill
Aaron's Hill has hotels and guest accommodation in and around it. Hotel work can be planned room by room, with out-of-hours working where needed. Workplaces and the common parts of blocks of flats in England need a fire risk assessment under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which is often where open fire-stopping gaps are first noticed. We apply fire-rated sealant to the assessor’s or designer’s specification and the product’s tested details.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Mark and All Saints Church of England Primary, fire-stopping around service openings should be restored whenever new services go in. If you look after a church, hall or community building such as St Mark's Church and Community Centre, older buildings that have had new heating or wiring often have service gaps worth checking.

Why it’s worth doing now in Aaron's Hill
An open gap in a fire-resisting wall is a route for smoke and fire. Sealing it properly restores what the wall was there to do, and the sealing itself is often a contained piece of work. Homes in smaller places like Aaron's Hill can face more weather, and failed outside joints let damp into walls. Inside, a split seal lets water into floors and panels just as it would anywhere.
The cost reflects the work involved, not guesswork. That is why we ask about the job first and agree the price before starting.
