External Mastic in Whiterow
Specialist external mastic for Whiterow: the right sealant, proper preparation and a neat finish. Ask us for a quick quote.
- Sealant that has lost its bond to the brick or render
- Cracked joints where brick meets render or frames
- Moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left
Honest limits
Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:
- Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
- Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
If you’re not sure, just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.
What we seal
- Copings & trims
- Joints between brick and frames
- Brickwork movement joints
- Façade panels
- Concrete & block
- Render & cladding joints
External mastic for homes and businesses in Whiterow
Failed sealant is cut out, the depth set with closed-cell backing rod, and the joint resealed with a low-modulus sealant made for outside. We pick a colour that sits well with the wall so the line blends in. We work on joints between brick and frames, façade panels and copings & trims, and common reasons people get in touch are weathered mastic that no longer stretches and cracked joints where brick meets render or frames.
Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

How to look after the new joints
Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:
- Have failed joints looked at early
- Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below
- Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
- Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar
Keep the joints clear of soil, plants and climbing growth. Anything that holds water against the joint wears it out sooner.
Leave a failed movement joint and water keeps getting into the wall. That can lead to damp patches, staining and frost damage.
Can I do it myself?
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.
What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.
How the job changes by surface
Cladding and façade panels
Metal and composite panels move a lot with temperature, so the joint sealant has to cope with frequent movement. We choose the product to suit.
Concrete and blockwork
Wide joints in concrete need the depth controlling carefully. We size the backing rod to the gap so the sealant is not too deep.
Signs you need external mastic in Whiterow
If plants are growing out of a joint, the sealant has normally failed or was never there. Dirt and roots then trap moisture in the joint.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
- Plants rooting in failed movement joints
- Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
- Failed seals between different materials
Letting a property close to Wick station? Then split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

Whiterow questions
Do you work for landlords with property near Wick station?
Yes. We work for landlords and agents as well as householders, and several properties can be quoted together. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.
Is Whiterow within the area you cover?
Yes. Whiterow is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Will the new joint stand out?
The sealant colour is picked to suit the wall. There’s a wide choice of exterior colours.
Where is Mr Mastic based?
We work from Crawley. We cover Whiterow and the rest of Highland.
Should I try DIY first?
Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.
Why is there a gap in my brick wall?
Walls move with heat, cold and moisture, so long walls have planned gaps to take that movement. It’s closed with backing rod and a flexible sealant.
What sealant do you use?
Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, chosen to suit the joint. We explain the product when we quote.
Are you ARBOMaster approved?
Yes. We’re approved under the ARBOMaster scheme.
Whiterow buildings and the weather
Whiterow is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.
If you look after a building such as Wick High School, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing. In the older streets around Pulteneytown Parish Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.
Whiterow is about 19 miles south-east of Thurso, in Highland. Wherever you are in the KW1 postcode area, our applicators can take on external mastic. Across Highland, we cover 253 places, and Whiterow is one of them.

The process
A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, do the work and clear up. It usually takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Somewhere like Whiterow may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- First, the joints are inspected and the access agreed.
- Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
- Joint faces are cleaned back and primed if the sealant needs it.
- We fit closed-cell backing rod to control the depth.
- The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.
Preparing for the visit
- Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
- Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
- Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
