Should I try it myself first?
If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We cut it out and start again.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
Aftercare tips
A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:
- Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
- Show decorators and builders where the movement joints are
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
- Check external joints each spring

What happens if it’s left?
Mortar or ordinary filler might look like a quick way to close an open joint, but it locks the joint solid. The movement then cracks the brickwork or render nearby. A flexible sealant over backing rod is what the joint needs.
