External mastic in Wallaceton, done properly
A movement joint is only as good as its depth. Backing rod controls how deep the sealant goes and keeps it off the back of the joint, leaving it bonded to two faces so it can move with the wall. We work on copings & trims, render & cladding joints and façade panels, and people most often call us about hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving and movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant.
Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering.
You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

When to call us in Wallaceton
Every building moves. Clay bricks expand slightly over their life, concrete and block shrink, and everything moves with temperature and wet. The sealant in the movement joints takes that strain.
It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:
- Failed sealant between panels on a façade
- Rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint
- Joints where the bead has come unstuck
- Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
In and around Wallaceton, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

- What preparation is included
- How hidden problems are handled
- What guarantee comes with the work
Your questions about external mastic in Wallaceton
Is external mastic in Wallaceton guaranteed?
Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever it is. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Can you do external mastic in Wallaceton?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Wallaceton is part of that. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll send you a clear quote.
Do the sealants smell?
Sometimes, a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures.
Will the new joint stand out?
We choose a sealant colour to suit the brick, stone or render so the joint blends in. Exterior sealants come in a good range of colours.
Can you work on commercial sites?
Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages to suit the site.
Is it messy?
No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.
Can I add another job to the visit?
Yes, we can. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.
Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. We’re an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
What the job involves on each surface
Joints between dissimilar materials
Wherever two materials meet, they move differently. We seal the joint with a flexible exterior sealant so neither cracks the other.
Brickwork movement joints
Vertical joints in long brick walls let the brickwork expand without cracking. They’re resealed over backing rod with a low-modulus sealant.
External mastic in Wallaceton: local notes
Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.
Whether the job is in Wallaceton itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

How the visit works
On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we will take it from there. The job generally takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access, including the tidy-up. Around Wallaceton, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.
- Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
- Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
- Backing rod goes in so the sealant can stretch between the two faces.
- Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
- A low-modulus exterior sealant is gunned in and tooled to a neat finish.

Advice
Other services in Wallaceton
Why deal with it now?
A properly done movement joint is an even line in a colour that suits the wall. A hurried job with smeared edges and no backing looks worse and fails sooner so it’s worth doing right. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.
What it costs depends on how much there is to do, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. You will have a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Aftercare tips
Looking after new joints is easy:
- Have failed joints looked at early
- Tell anyone working on the walls about the movement joints
- Keep movement joints as flexible joints, not mortar
- Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
Avoid pressure-washing straight into the joints. High-pressure water can lift the edges.
An open movement joint lets rain into the wall every time it pours. Over time it can mean damp inside, stained render or frost-damaged brick, all bigger jobs than a reseal.
Honest limits
To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:
- Failed render or damaged cladding panels
- Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
- Movement that is more than a sealant joint can take
If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before booking.

DIY sealant or a professional job?
If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
