External mastic in Skye Green, done properly
We cut out failed sealant, set the joint depth with closed-cell backing rod and reseal with a low-modulus exterior sealant. The colour is chosen to suit the brick or render so the line blends in. If you’re dealing with brick movement joints where the sealant has split and movement joints filled with mortar instead of sealant, we can put it right.
External sealant needs dry, clean surfaces, so work around Skye Green is planned for dry weather. Let us know about access to every wall, plus any garages or outbuildings.
We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.

Walls and rooflines in Skye Green
With historic houses such as Layer Marney Tower (about 4.5 miles south-east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Skye Green as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth. London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.
If you let a flat or house near Kelvedon station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside. In the older streets around Parish Church of All Saints, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

When to call us in Skye Green
Using the wrong sealant is another common reason. A stiff, general-purpose sealant cannot cope with a joint that moves a lot, so it pulls away from the edges.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Joints where the bead has come unstuck
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
- Joints with sealant missing in places
- Panel joints letting water in
If you look after a building such as Honywood Community Science School, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.
What your quote should include
- What the quote includes, VAT included or not
- What the cure time is
- The length of the guarantee
- Is the old sealant removed completely?
DIY sealant or a professional job?
If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
Questions from Skye Green
I let a flat near Kelvedon station. Can you help?
Yes. We work for landlords and agents as well as householders. You can phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with the details for a clear quote.
Is Skye Green in your area for external mastic?
Yes. Our work covers London and the South East, and Skye Green is part of that. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with a few details of the job, and we will give you a clear quote.
Should I point up the gap in my brickwork?
No. Mortar locks the joint solid, so the movement cracks the wall elsewhere. It needs a flexible sealant over backing rod.
Can you seal joints between render and window frames?
Yes. Materials like render, brick, metal and uPVC all move differently, so a flexible sealant is needed where they meet. We choose one that suits both surfaces.
Will the old sealant be removed?
Yes, every time. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes: twelve months. If anything is not right with the work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.
Can new sealant go over the old?
No. Fresh sealant does not stick to old sealant, and it traps any mould or water underneath. We remove it all first.
What do you put in the joint?
We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we’ll tell you what we’re using.
Honest limits
We will not take on work that won’t last, so here’s what sealant cannot put right:
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
- Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
- Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
If you’re not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.

How the visit works
When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Somewhere as small as Skye Green, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- We inspect the joints and agree which need resealing and how they’ll be reached.
- The old mastic and anything lodged in the joint is removed.
- We clean both faces of the joint and prime them where the product calls for it.
- Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
- We gun in a flexible exterior sealant in a colour that suits the wall and tool it neatly.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before
- Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

Keeping the joints in good condition
Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
- Walk round the building once a year and look at the joints
- Wash walls gently around the sealant
Make sure anyone working on the wall later knows where the movement joints are. They must stay as flexible joints, never rendered or pointed over.
Leaks behind façade panels and render often go unseen. When it finally shows inside, the joint may have been open for years so early resealing is worth it.
What happens if it’s left?
Low-modulus sealants stretch easily, so they put less strain on the joint edges. That matters on brick, render and concrete, which can be weaker at the face. Too stiff a sealant can pull at the edges and break them. Around Skye Green, older homes often have timber in their floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.

How the job changes by surface
Brickwork movement joints
Brick movement joints are often mistaken for a missing mortar line. If that is happened, we rake it out and reseal it properly if the joint can be cleared.
Cladding and façade panels
Panel systems often rely on sealant between and around the panels. We reseal them with a sealant suited to the panel material.
