DIY versus a professional finish

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

How we handle external mastic in New Galloway

On houses, flats and commercial buildings across New Galloway, we reseal joints in brickwork, render, cladding and façade panels. Every joint gets the same careful preparation: clean, sound faces and a controlled depth. If you are dealing with hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving and cracked joints where brick meets render or frames, we can help.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in New Galloway depends on the weather. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job.

Aftercare tips

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar
  • Ask before painting over external sealant
  • Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
  • Tell anyone working on the walls about the movement joints

Only paint over the joint if we’ve confirmed the sealant can take paint. Many exterior sealants aren’t designed to be painted and spoil the finish.

Act while the splits are small. At that stage it’s a simple cut out and reseal before water has had years to get in.

Leave it or put it right?

A failed movement joint lets water into the wall and can run behind render or cladding. Dealing with it early keeps the repair to the joint, instead of the wall and finishes around it. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Different surfaces, different methods

Cladding and façade panels

If the façade has a specified sealant, that’s what we use or an approved alternative. Send us any details you have about the façade.

Joints between dissimilar materials

Wherever two materials meet, they move differently. A flexible sealant bridges the two so neither cracks the other.

The process

There’s no need to move everything out, just the space around the work. We protect the rest, and the job takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access in most cases. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. We cut out the old mastic and rake out anything in the joint.
  3. The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
  4. Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
  5. We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

Advice

Outside joints around New Galloway

Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for movement joints and outside wall joints to keep out.

In and around New Galloway, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. Whether the job is in New Galloway itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Quotes for external mastic in New Galloway

There’s no set price list. What we look at:

  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • The number and length of the joints
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Any working-time requirements on site

We do not show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote.

What we need to know

To make quoting easier, let us know:

  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel

For a quote, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the location and a short description of the problem. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts.

When something else is needed

In fairness, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering

Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before you book.
