Laide External Mastic
Specialist external mastic for Laide: the right sealant, proper preparation and a neat finish. Call for a quick quote.

- Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
- Panel joints letting water in
DIY versus a professional finish
If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
How we handle external mastic in Laide
Movement joints let brickwork, render and cladding expand and shrink without cracking. Its sealant has to flex with the building, season after season, so once it splits or hardens, the joint stops working and water gets in. We’re often asked to deal with gaps where render, brick and frames meet and weathered mastic that no longer stretches, on render & cladding joints, joints between brick and frames and brickwork movement joints.
In and around a place like Laide, many buildings face open ground and take the full weather. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering.
Whatever the size of the job, you get the same one-year guarantee.

For landlords and businesses
In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so the work can be planned room by room around your bookings where we can. Hotel work is part of what we do, alongside homes and businesses.
From a single let to a portfolio, the work is the same standard: the old material taken out, careful preparation and a 12-month guarantee.
Do you need external mastic in Laide?
Weeds, moss and debris in a joint are a sign the sealant has gone. Roots and dirt hold water against the wall and make things worse.
Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:
- Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
- Sealant that has lost its bond to the brick or render
- Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
In and around Laide, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
What to look for in a quote

What sealant work can’t fix
Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant won’t do:
- Structural movement, which needs a surveyor or engineer
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
- Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Outside joints around Laide
Laide is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that.
Whether the job is in Laide itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Laide: your questions answered
Can you do external mastic in Laide?
Yes, Laide is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.
Do you cover smaller places like Laide?
Yes, Laide is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Which products do you use?
Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, chosen to suit the joint. We explain the product when we quote.
Will there be a smell?
That depends on the sealant. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little.
Is it OK to seal over old sealant?
No, it will not last. It may look fine at first, but the new bead soon lifts. The old sealant has to come out completely.
Can you reach joints on upper floors?
Each building is different. Send us pictures and a rough idea of the height, and we will confirm what access is needed.
What do you need from me for a quote?
A short description and the location. We will ask anything else we need to know.
Can tenants book the work?
Of course. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.
Looking after it afterwards
How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Leave the joints unpainted unless we have said otherwise
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
- Keep high-pressure jets off the joints
- Tell anyone working on the walls about the movement joints
Have a quick look at the joints each spring. Watch for splits, edges coming away or growth in the joint.
Once a joint can’t move, the wall finds another way, normally as cracking in the brickwork or render nearby. Resealing it early helps prevent that.
What we do, step by step
There’s no need to move everything out before we come, only the area right around the joints. Everything nearby is protected, and the work takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access for a typical job. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work.
- First, the joints are inspected and the access agreed.
- Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
- The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
- Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
- The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us if parking is tricky
- Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
- Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises

Related advice
Surface by surface
Copings and trims
Copings expand and contract through the day, so the joints need a sealant that stays flexible.
Concrete and blockwork
Concrete faces can be dusty and porous, so preparation is key. We prime where the sealant needs it before sealing.
