External mastic near Hillhead

Hillhead buildings and the weather

Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, which means movement joints and outside wall joints has to cope with a lot of rain.

Around Hillhead, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

About our external mastic in Hillhead

A movement joint is only as good as its depth. Closed-cell backing rod sets the depth and stops the sealant sticking to the back, so it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch. Typical jobs include brick movement joints where the sealant has split and weeds or debris growing in open joints, on render & cladding joints, façade panels and joints between brick and frames.

External sealant needs dry surfaces, so outdoor work around Hillhead is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us how to reach each wall, gutter and roofline.

We stand behind the work with a 12-month guarantee, so you are not left on your own once the job is done.

Your questions about external mastic in Hillhead

Is Hillhead within the area you cover?

Yes. Hillhead is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do you cover Hillhead for external mastic?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Hillhead is part of that. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

How do I get a quote for external mastic in Hillhead?

Every job is different, so each one gets its own quote. To get one, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing and where.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Many landlords are glad to have it sorted.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Every job comes with a 12-month guarantee.

When is the sealant fully cured?

Cure times vary by product and the conditions. We tell you how long to leave it before we go.

Can you seal joints between render and window frames?

Yes. Different materials move at different rates, so the joint between them must be flexible. We choose one that suits both surfaces.

What colours does the sealant come in?

The aim is a neat, even joint in a colour that suits the wall. We’ll talk through colour options before any work starts.

How we quote for external mastic

The quote reflects the job in front of us. We take into account:

  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • The number and length of the joints
  • The product the joint needs
  • Mould in or behind the old joints

Doing several joints on one visit is usually more efficient than separate visits. You will get one clear quote for the whole job.

What we need to know

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Please mention:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • The rough size of the job
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs

We do not publish a price list. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To get started, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What we’re called out for in Hillhead

If plants are growing out of a joint, the sealant has normally failed or was never there. Roots and dirt hold water against the wall.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
  • Moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left
  • Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
  • Joints where the bead has come unstuck

For an older house near a landmark such as Coylton Parish Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

What your quote should include

  • What the quote includes, VAT included or not
  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first
  • What guarantee comes with the work
  • What product goes in the joint

Our hiring checklist

Different surfaces, different methods

Cladding and façade panels

If the façade has a specified sealant, that is what we use, or one the system allows. Tell us what the building has when you get in touch.

Brickwork movement joints

Brick movement joints are often mistaken for a missing mortar line. If that’s happened, we rake it out and reseal it properly where it can be done safely.

Honest limits

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Render that’s blown, hollow or coming away
  • Adding movement joints to masonry that has none
  • Damp that is not coming from the joint

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we seal

  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Façade panels
  • Copings & trims
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Concrete & block
  • Render & cladding joints

Keeping the joints in good condition

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Check external joints each spring
  • Get split or bare joints resealed while the damage is small
  • Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar
  • Don’t let climbing plants root in the sealant

Have a quick look at the joints each spring. Splits, gaps at the edges or plants in the joint are early warning signs.

An open movement joint lets rain into the wall every time it pours. That can lead to damp patches, staining and frost damage.

How the visit works

Once we’re on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. Most jobs then take a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. For a place like Hillhead, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
  2. We take out the old sealant until the faces are sound.
  3. Backing rod goes in so the sealant can stretch between the two faces.
  4. We prime the faces where required.
  5. We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any tricky access
  • Clear the area around the work
  • Tell us about any water getting in

Should I try it myself first?

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
