Hermiston External Mastic

We cover Hermiston for sealing brickwork movement joints, render, cladding and façade joints. Old sealant removed completely, joints prepared properly.

  • Rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint
  • Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels
  • Weeds or debris growing in open joints

Need external mastic in Hermiston?

External mastic in Hermiston, done properly

We cut out failed sealant, set the joint depth with closed-cell backing rod and reseal with a low-modulus exterior sealant. The colour is chosen to suit the brick or render so the joint does not stand out. If you have panel joints letting water in and plants rooting in failed movement joints, we can help.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever you are in Edinburgh.

Honest limits

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t solve:

  • Cracking across the wall rather than at a joint
  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
  • Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work

If you’re not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Surfaces we seal

  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Copings & trims
  • Concrete & block
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Façade panels

What affects the cost of external mastic

Call for a quick quote. The main things that affect it are:

  • Whether the work is at height
  • The product the joint needs
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved

The cost depends on the amount of work, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. You will have a clear quote before any work starts.

Asking for a quote

When you call or email, it’s useful to know:

  • If someone has resealed it before
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved

To get a quote, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us where the job is and what the problem looks like. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts.

FAQs for Hermiston

Will you come out to Hermiston?

Yes, Hermiston is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

I let a flat near Edinburgh Park station. Can you help?

Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners, and several properties can go on one quote. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details for a clear quote.

Can you match the colour of my brickwork?

We aim for a joint that suits the wall rather than one that jumps out. Colour is agreed with you before we begin from the range available.

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, chosen to suit the joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Where do you work from?

Our base is in Crawley, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status, and we’re fully insured.

Just the basics: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. After that, simply send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Do I need to be at home?

Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. Indoors, that normally means someone at home.

Outside joints around Hermiston

Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex. Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with sash windows throughout the Georgian New Town. If a home is listed or in a conservation area, it’s worth checking with the council before changing the look of windows or walls.

In and around Hermiston, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
  • Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below
  • Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
  • Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter

Keep pressure washers away from the sealant. A strong jet can damage the edges of the bead and let water in behind.

Leaks behind façade panels and render often go unseen. By the time there’s a damp patch, the damage can be well established so early resealing is worth it.

What happens if it’s left?

A properly done movement joint is an even line in a colour that suits the wall. A rushed bead with no backing looks untidy and doesn’t last so it’s worth doing right. In a place like Hermiston, small leaks are easy to put off, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Rather than a set price list, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. You’ll know the price before we begin.

The process

Once we’re on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. Around Hermiston, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. We look at every joint and agree a colour to suit the wall.
  2. Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
  3. Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
  4. Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
  5. We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any tricky access
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

Do you need external mastic in Hermiston?

Joints sealed without backing rod, or far too deep, rarely last. If the sealant sticks to the back as well as the sides, it cannot stretch and tears as soon as the joint widens.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
  • Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
  • Water getting into walls through failed joints
  • Moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left

If you let a flat or house near Edinburgh Park station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.
