External & façade joints in Clivocast, Shetland Islands

Problem with your movement joints in Clivocast? We cut out the old, prepare the joints and apply the right sealant.

  • Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
  • Gaps where render, brick and frames meet
  • Sealant that has lost its bond to the brick or render

External mastic in Clivocast

Many failed façade joints only get noticed once there’s a stain or a damp patch inside. We look over the joints, agree the ones to renew and reseal with a flexible, weatherproof product in a matching colour. We work on joints between brick and frames, façade panels and copings & trims, and the jobs we see most are damp patches traced to an open external joint and joints pointed up with cement by mistake.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Clivocast depends on the weather. Tell us how to reach each wall, gutter and roofline.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, large or small.

What sealant work can’t fix

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Structural movement, which needs a surveyor or engineer
  • Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
  • Failed render or damaged cladding panels

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before you book.

What we seal

  • Concrete & block
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Copings & trims
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Façade panels

Why act early in Clivocast

Low-modulus sealants stretch easily, so they put less strain on the joint edges. That protects surfaces like brick, render and concrete. A stiffer product can damage the joint edge as it fails. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

Why book with us

  • We never seal over old sealant
  • A choice of colours where the product allows
  • Tidy, careful work
  • Fully insured

See our cost guide or our reviews.

How to look after the new joints

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:

  • Clear growth from the base of walls and joints
  • Point out the joints to other trades
  • Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below
  • Keep high-pressure jets off the joints

Do not paint over the new sealant unless we’ve said the product is paintable. Many exterior sealants aren’t designed to be painted, and paint can crack as the joint moves.

Gaps, plants or missing sealant in a joint are worth getting looked at. Early work is quicker and leaves a better finish.

External mastic in Clivocast: local notes

Clivocast is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.

Around Clivocast, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it. Homes close to Uyeasound Church include some older properties, and the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Clivocast is in the Shetland Islands. From the centre of Clivocast to the outskirts, we cover external mastic for every kind of property. Across the Shetland Islands, we cover 63 places, Clivocast among them.

Our applicators cover all of ZE2 for external mastic and the streets around it. If you are just outside Clivocast, we cover Cullivoe (4 miles north-west), Baltasound (6 miles north), Houbie (6 miles south), Camb (7 miles south-west) and Mid Yell (8 miles south-west). If you’re somewhere remote, the job takes a little more planning.

What affects the quote in Clivocast

Every job gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • The number and length of the joints
  • The type of sealant required

Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you an honest view and a quote.

Helping us quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • If someone has resealed it before
  • The problem you’ve noticed

If you’re in Clivocast and need external mastic, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk. Tell us what the problem is and where, and we will agree the price before any work begins.

Can I do it myself?

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Different surfaces, different methods

Render joints

Render has movement joints and stop beads that need sealing. We reseal them with a flexible exterior sealant that suits the render colour.

Concrete and blockwork

Big joints in concrete need careful depth control. We size the backing rod to the gap and keep the sealant to the right depth.

How the visit works

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we will take it from there. The job generally takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building, including the tidy-up. For a place like Clivocast, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. We start by checking each joint, agreeing the ones to redo and how we will reach them.
  2. Old sealant and any debris are cut and raked out.
  3. We clean both faces of the joint and prime them where the product calls for it.
  4. Closed-cell backing rod is fitted to set the depth and stop three-sided bonding.
  5. A flexible exterior sealant is applied and tooled in a colour to suit the wall.

How to prepare

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints

Getting a quote

Getting a quote is simple: tell us what needs doing and where, and roughly how big it is. A few photos by email make the job easier to understand, and we’ll take it from there.

FAQs for Clivocast

Is external mastic in a coastal place like Clivocast any different?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Do you cover Clivocast for external mastic?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Clivocast is part of that. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

Do the sealants smell?

That depends on the sealant. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little.

Can you match the colour of my brickwork?

The sealant colour is picked to suit the wall so the joint blends in. Exterior sealants come in a good range of colours.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do, as well as homes. Working times can be discussed when we quote.

How long does external mastic last?

It varies with how exposed the wall is and how much the joint moves. Look for splits, hardening or edges coming away and have them redone then.

Can I do it myself?

That depends on the joint. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

What sealant do you use?

Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, chosen to suit the joint. We’ll tell you what we’re using and why.
