Common questions in Ceann Loch Gilb

Is Ceann Loch Gilb in your area for external mastic?

Yes, Ceann Loch Gilb is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Will you come out to Ceann Loch Gilb?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can you match the colour of my brickwork?

We choose a sealant colour to suit the brick, stone or render, so the joint sits quietly in the wall. Exterior sealants come in a good range of colours.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We are ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.

When is the sealant fully cured?

Different products cure at different speeds, so please follow the time we give you when we finish.

Can tenants book the work?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Landlords are often happy for the work to be arranged.

Should I try DIY first?

It depends on the job. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

Do I have to be there?

We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.

What happens if it’s left?

It often makes sense to reseal all the failing joints on an elevation together. Joints of the same age tend to fail together. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

The cost depends on the size of the job, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

DIY versus a professional finish

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We cut it out and start again, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

Ceann Loch Gilb buildings and the weather

Ceann Loch Gilb is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.

In and around Ceann Loch Gilb, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. If you look after a building such as Lochgilphead High School, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.

Surface by surface

Copings and trims

Coping and trim joints face rain and sun head on. We reseal them with an exterior sealant suited to the material.

Concrete and blockwork

Concrete and block walls shrink as they dry and move with temperature. We reseal their joints with backing rod and a flexible product.

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple:

  • Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below
  • Tell anyone working on the walls about the movement joints
  • Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
  • Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar

Follow the cure time we give you before the joint is knocked or disturbed. Most exterior sealants skin fast but take longer to cure right through.

If you can see gaps, plants or bare sections in a joint, have it checked. Early work is quicker and leaves a better finish.

What sealant work can’t fix

We won’t take on work that will not last, so these are the limits:

  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
  • Cracking across the wall rather than at a joint
  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Surfaces we seal

  • Concrete & block
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Façade panels
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Copings & trims

How the visit works

There’s no need to move everything out before we come, only the area right around the joints. Everything nearby is protected, and the work takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building in most cases. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work.

  1. We inspect the joints and agree which need resealing and how they’ll be reached.
  2. The old mastic and anything lodged in the joint is removed.
  3. The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
  4. We push in closed-cell backing rod so the sealant is the right depth and bonds to the sides only.
  5. We gun in a flexible exterior sealant in a colour that suits the wall and tool it neatly.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
