How we handle bathroom resealing in Wimbledon

It isn’t only bathrooms. The joint between worktop and wall, the edge of the sink and the bottom of the splashback get wet every single day, and water behind a laminate worktop can make it swell. Kitchen joints get a sealant suited to kitchens, colour-matched where it shows. If you have a bead that has pulled away from the tiles and failed sealant on the screen profile, we can put it right, whatever the surface.

London’s water is hard, so limescale builds up along sealant lines, in grout and on fittings. For a bathroom or kitchen in Wimbledon, getting the joints right keeps water where it belongs and the room looking clean.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee, whatever its size.

When something else is needed

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Loose or hollow tiles, or failed tanking behind them
  • Cracks in the tray itself rather than the joint
  • Cracked or missing grout between tiles (that’s regrouting)

If you’re not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Landlord and commercial work in Wimbledon

We also work for businesses, from offices to washrooms and kitchens. On commercial sites, working times can be discussed when we quote.

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s quick to put right between tenancies. Several properties can go on one quote.

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

What we do, step by step

We bring everything the job needs with us, so you don’t need to buy or prepare anything. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take a couple of hours for a single bath or shower. In a London area like Wimbledon, the main things to plan are parking and access: let us know about parking, the floor we will be working on and any lift or shared entrance.

  1. First, each joint is checked for movement and signs of water.
  2. The old silicone is cut out completely, along with the film it leaves on the tiles.
  3. Joints are degreased and any mould is treated.
  4. With the joint dry, and any bath loaded with water, a single bead of anti-fungal silicone is applied.
  5. The bead is tooled smooth and you’re told the cure time, normally around 24 hours.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Tell us about any water getting in

Common problems we fix in Wimbledon

Plenty of failed sealant has been laid over the top of older sealant. Fresh silicone can’t grip the old bead underneath, so it lifts, lets water in and traps mould underneath.

People generally contact us after spotting something like this:

  • Lumpy, uneven sealant from a DIY attempt
  • Leaks into the floor or ceiling below
  • Failed sealant on the screen profile
  • Mouldy sealant that has gone black

If you let a flat or house near Wimbledon station, fresh sealant around the bath, shower and sink between tenancies helps a property present well and keeps leaks at bay.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Looking after new joints is easy, and it makes a real difference:

  • Clean with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth
  • Look for lifting corners and small gaps now and then
  • Dry worktop joints after washing up
  • Wait for the cure time we give you

Mould needs damp, so keep the room aired. Run the extractor fan during and after a shower, so the bead dries out between uses.

A few black dots in the silicone soon become a black line. When it has grown right through, it rarely cleans out, and nearby grout often goes the same way. Replacing the sealant early keeps the job small.

What the job involves on each surface

Kitchen worktops & upstands

Water behind a laminate worktop can make the edge swell. A continuous bead along the back keeps water out, as long as the worktop itself is firmly fixed.

Basins & vanity units

Vanity units have long, worktop-style joints against the wall. Water that gets behind can damage the unit, so a neat, continuous bead matters.
