DIY sealant or a professional job?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We cut it out and start again.

Bathroom resealing in Inverugie, done properly

With over 20 years in the trade, we reseal baths, showers and kitchens in homes across Inverugie. We’re fully insured ARBOMaster approved applicators, and every job carries our one-year guarantee. Typical jobs include leaking joints on a shower screen and leaks into the floor or ceiling below, across shower trays & enclosures, kitchen worktops & upstands and sinks & splashbacks.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Avoid abrasive pads on the sealant
  • Wipe the sealant dry after showering
  • Stick to a soft cloth and a mild cleaner
  • Look for lifting corners and small gaps now and then

Keep water off the new bead until it has cured, which is normally around 24 hours. Once it’s cured, wiping it down after use keeps it looking new.

Small signs come before a leak: lifting ends, gaps, dark shadows under the bead or a stain downstairs. Any of these means the joint needs attention.

Why it’s worth doing now in Inverugie

A failed joint gets more costly to put right the longer it’s left. Water that gets behind a bath soaks into the floor, the panel and sometimes the ceiling below, and that’s a far bigger job than a reseal. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask a few questions first.

Different surfaces, different methods

Kitchen worktops & upstands

Laminate worktops swell if water gets into the core. A sound joint along the back edge stops that.

Sinks & splashbacks

Water getting under the rim of an inset sink can soak the worktop. Where the sealant around the visible edge has failed, we renew it.

Landlord and commercial work in Inverugie

Mouldy or split sealant often shows up at the end of a tenancy, and it’s easy to sort out between tenants. Several properties can be quoted together.

We work for landlords and agents as well as homeowners. Sealant work between tenants keeps a property looking cared for.

When it is not the sealant

We will not take on work that won’t last, so here’s what sealant can’t put right:

  • Loose or hollow tiles, or failed tanking behind them
  • Water coming from the plumbing rather than the joint
  • Cracks in the tray itself rather than the joint

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

How the visit works

Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we don’t rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes half a day or less for one room, longer when the kitchen is included. For a place like Inverugie, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We look at every joint first and check for movement or leaks.
  2. Every trace of the old bead is removed, including the thin smear on the tiles.
  3. Joints are degreased and any mould is treated.
  4. When the joint is dry, and a bath has been filled with water, the new silicone goes on.
  5. The bead is tooled smooth and you’re told the cure time, normally around 24 hours.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

Bathroom resealing in Inverugie: local notes

Inverugie is within about 2 miles of the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.

In and around Inverugie, as anywhere, good bathroom resealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. Whether the job is in Inverugie itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Inverugie questions

What guarantee comes with bathroom resealing in Inverugie?

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever it is. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Do you cover smaller places like Inverugie?

Yes. Inverugie is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you get rid of the black mould in my sealant?

Yes, we can. The old sealant comes out, the mould is treated, and we reseal with anti-fungal sanitary silicone.

Will there be a smell?

That depends on the sealant. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all, and any smell fades as they cure.

Should I try DIY first?

You can, for simple jobs. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. If it doesn’t work out, we can redo it.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We are approved under the ARBOMaster scheme.

Does someone need to be in?

That depends on where the joints are. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in, and for outside work we will agree access with you when we book.

How long does a bath or shower reseal take?

It takes a couple of hours for a single bath or shower. We’ll confirm how long your job needs when we quote.
