Stenness: your questions answered
Is Stenness in your area for window mastic?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Stenness is part of that. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we will give you a clear price.
Is window mastic in a coastal place like Stenness any different?
Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.
Do you have sealant for grey or black windows?
Yes, we choose a colour to suit the frame. Grey and black frames get grey or black sealant, and wood-effect frames normally suit brown.
Will it make a mess?
No. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.
What does window mastic cost?
There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: its size, the old material, access and the product needed. We agree the price before any work begins.
Does someone need to be in?
For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. Once we have agreed the job, you do not need to watch us work.
Where is Mr Mastic based?
We’re a Crawley-based firm. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.
Which products do you use?
We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice, and we will explain our choice.
Window mastic in Stenness, done properly
The mastic around a window or door seals the gap between the frame and the wall. Once that seal fails, wind and rain find the gap. Our applicators cut it out and replace it with a flexible, weatherproof sealant. Typical jobs include draughts coming in around windows and doors and hard, cracked sealant around windows, across uPVC windows, patio & French doors and composite doors.
Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. The sealant has to suit the stone, which rules out acetoxy silicones that can mark or attack it.

How to look after the new joints
Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:
- Keep paint and stain on wooden frames in good order
- Avoid blasting the frames with a pressure washer
- Walk round the house once a year and look at the joints
- Ventilate rooms so frames do not stay wet inside
A yearly look round the frames is enough. Cracks and lifting edges are easy to spot early.
Water trapped behind a failed joint can start rot in timber frames and sills. Once wood has rotted, it needs repair before it can be sealed, so it pays to reseal before that happens.
Surface by surface
Aluminium frames
Large aluminium doors have long joints down each side and across the head, and the bottom joint sees the most water. Each is cleaned, backed where deep and resealed.
Window sills
Stone and concrete sills have their own joints, including the one between the sill and the frame above. Those are sealed with a product suited to stone or concrete.
Do you need window mastic in Stenness?
Plenty of failed mastic was poorly applied in the first place. Sealant run over dust, wet brick or loose mortar didn’t grip properly, so it comes away long before its time.
If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:
- Untidy mastic left by window fitters
- Old mastic that has gone black or come away
- Hard, cracked sealant around windows
- Water coming in at the bottom corners of a door
In the older streets around Stenness Church, the joint between an old wall and a newer frame is generally the first place rain gets in.

- How long the guarantee is
- When the joint can take water or movement
- Whether VAT is included
Can I do it myself?
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We cut it out and start again.
What window mastic looks like in Stenness
Stenness is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Island weather, with its wind and salt spray, is tough on the mastic around window and door frames.
Around Stenness, as everywhere, window mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

The process
At the end, we look at the finished work together and explain the cure time. The work normally takes anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are, depending on the size of the job. Outdoor work around Stenness depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.
- We check each frame and agree which ones need doing.
- The old mastic is cut out and the surfaces cleaned back.
- Where gaps are deep, backing rod goes in first.
- New exterior sealant goes on in a matching colour and is tooled smooth.
- We clear up and check every joint is fully closed.
Preparing for the visit

How we quote for window mastic
Jobs vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:
- The number and length of the joints
- How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
- Any working-time requirements on site
- Whether the work is at height
The cost reflects the work involved, not guesswork. That is why we ask a few questions first.
Asking for a quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:
- Where the job is, and your postcode
- The problem you’ve noticed
- Photos by email, if that is easy
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or send an email if you’d rather. Describe what needs sealing and we will talk you through the work and send you a clear quote.
Leave it or put it right?
Getting a straight, even bead on an outside frame takes practice, especially on upper floors. A professional job is cut out properly, backed where needed and finished neatly, in a sealant suited to the wall. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference.
