Window mastic in Hurtmore

A cold draught around a closed window often comes from the frame edge. Resealing that joint can make a room feel noticeably less draughty and quietens the whistle on windy days. If the draught is through the window seals instead, we will tell you. We work on window sills, patio & French doors and uPVC windows, and people most often call us about hard, cracked sealant around windows and sealant in the wrong colour for the frame.

Mastic can only go onto a dry, clean joint, so window work in Hurtmore is booked around the forecast. Tell us about access to every side of the house, including upper-floor windows.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, and the guarantee is the same wherever you are.

What the job involves on each surface

Timber windows & doors

Where timber has rotted at the joint, it needs repairing first. We will point out any rot we find, as that’s a job for a joiner.

Aluminium frames

Large aluminium doors have long joints down each side and across the head, and the threshold joint takes a lot of water. We prepare and reseal every joint, backing the deep ones.

What sealant work cannot fix

It helps to know what we can’t do:

  • Worn gaskets, brush seals or a door that has dropped
  • Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (that needs a new unit)
  • A sash or casement that will not close properly

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly before you book.

The process

We bring everything the job needs with us, so there’s nothing for you to buy. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. It normally takes a few hours for a handful of frames, longer for a whole house. For a village or hamlet like Hurtmore, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We check how each frame can be reached safely.
  2. All the failed sealant is cut away.
  3. Frame and wall are cleaned and must be dry before sealing, and primed where the sealant calls for it.
  4. Deep voids are backed, then the sealant is gunned in.
  5. The joint is shaped to shed water and the area tidied.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Tell us about any water getting in

For landlords and businesses

Mouldy or split sealant often shows up at the end of a tenancy. Several properties can go on one quote.

Hurtmore homes and the weather

Historic houses like Loseley Park (about 1.5 miles north-east) are a reminder that the area around Hurtmore has older buildings as well as new. Where a home is older, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that is traditional sand mastic. Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day.

Homes close to Church of St Nicholas include some older properties, and the joint between an old wall and a newer frame is usually the first place rain gets in. Letting a property close to Godalming station? Then sound mastic around windows and doors keeps out the draughts and damp that tenants notice first.

Common questions in Hurtmore

I let a flat near Godalming station. Can you help?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can phone 0345 464 0079 or email us with the details for a clear quote.

Is Hurtmore in your area for window mastic?

Yes, Hurtmore is within the area we cover. We work across London and the South East. You can ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and tell us what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on where the joints are. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in.

What should I tell you?

Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. After that, simply call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator and we are fully insured too.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

Can you do upstairs windows?

Yes, where they can be reached safely. Tell us about access when you get in touch and we’ll plan for it.

When is the sealant fully cured?

It depends on the product. Before we leave, we will tell you the cure time.

What affects the cost of window mastic

Jobs vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • The amount of work
  • How many areas need sealing
  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • Any mould that needs treating

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Call for a quick quote and we’ll explain what it covers.

What to tell us for a quote

When you call or email, it’s useful to know:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel

For a quote, call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and tell us where the job is and what the problem looks like. We’ll send you a clear quote before any work starts.

Common problems we fix in Hurtmore

Joint shape matters as much as the product. A skim of sealant over a wide gap soon tears, and a gap filled solid can’t flex. That is what backing rod is for.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Cold air getting in at the frame edge
  • Gaps left after new windows were fitted
  • A bead that does not match the frame
  • Black, perished sealant on frames

Schools such as Charterhouse School are buildings too, and larger buildings have plenty of frames, and the mastic around each one ages.

Comparing quotes

  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Who turns up on the day
  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it

How to look after the new joints

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Keep drainage slots and sill grooves clear
  • Use gentle cleaners on frames and sealant
  • Keep timber frames painted
  • Air rooms to keep condensation down around windows

Try not to touch the new joint while it cures, for as long as we advise. Keep jet washers away from the frames.

Draughts get worse, not better. As old mastic keeps shrinking, the gap widens, and a cold room gets colder. Resealing closes it.
