Window Mastic in Hestingott
Our applicators work in Hestingott on mastic around window and door frames, sills and patio doors. Old material cut out, joints cleaned and sealed neatly and a 12-month guarantee.
- Cracked sealant at the sill ends
- Cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame
- Damp patches on the reveal after heavy rain
DIY sealant or a professional job?
If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
Window mastic for homes and businesses in Hestingott
Frames and walls do not move together. Plastic and aluminium frames move with the temperature, while masonry stays fairly still. So the sealant has to stretch and recover, which is why we use a low-modulus product. We work on aluminium frames, uPVC windows and patio & French doors, and the jobs we see most are cracked sealant at the sill ends and gaps left after new windows were fitted.
Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. The sealant has to suit the stone, which rules out acetoxy silicones that can mark or attack it.
The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.

Different surfaces, different methods
Aluminium frames
Metal frames expand in the sun and are often slim, with little room for error. A tidy bead in anthracite grey, black or a matching colour keeps the clean look.
Window sills
Sills catch the water running down the glass, so the sill ends and the joint under the frame are vital. They’re cut out and resealed with exterior sealant.
When something else is needed
We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:
- A frame that has rotted at the joint
- Damp problems in the wall away from the window
- Draughts through the window seals rather than the frame
If you are not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

When to call us in Hestingott
Water runs down the glass onto the sill, and the ends of the sill, where it meets the wall, are where it gets in. When that sealant fails, water gets into the wall or under the frame.
Look out for any of the following:
- White mastic on grey or black frames
- Gaps where the sill meets the wall
- Hard, cracked sealant around windows
- Gaps between the frame and the inside reveal
For an older house near a landmark such as Cross Kirk, replacement windows fitted into old openings often leave uneven gaps that need backing and a flexible joint.

What we do, step by step
On the day, we start by going over the job with you, so you know exactly what we are doing. We protect the surfaces around the joints before work begins. Most jobs take a morning for a couple of windows and a door. Somewhere like Hestingott may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- We check how each frame can be reached safely.
- All the failed sealant is cut away.
- Frame and wall are cleaned and must be dry before sealing, and primed where the sealant calls for it.
- Deep voids are backed, then the sealant is gunned in.
- The joint is shaped to shed water and the area tidied.
Getting ready for the visit
- Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
- Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
- Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
How to get a quote

How to look after the new joints
A little care helps the new joints last. We recommend:
- Wipe condensation off the frames
- Keep jet washers away from the mastic
- Use gentle cleaners on frames and sealant
- Keep paint and stain on wooden frames in good order
Have a look at the joints once a year, ideally after winter. Cracks and lifting edges are easy to spot early.
Wet, windy weather is when failed mastic shows itself, but resealing works best in dry conditions. Dealing with it when you first notice a crack avoids chasing leaks through the wet months.

We work for landlords and agents as well as householders. Sealant work between tenants is a simple way to keep a property in good order.

Hestingott homes and the weather
Hestingott is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Island jobs need planning around ferries and the weather, so the more notice, the better.
Around Hestingott, as everywhere, window mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

You can, for simple jobs. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.
