How to look after the new joints

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Walk round the house once a year and look at the joints
  • Keep jet washers away from the mastic
  • Keep paint off silicone joints
  • Keep drainage slots and sill grooves clear

Have a look at the joints once a year, ideally after winter. Small splits are simple to catch before they leak, and if anything looks wrong, just phone 0345 464 0079 or email us.

On timber windows, water behind the joint can lead to rot. Once wood has rotted, it needs repair before it can be sealed, so early resealing is worth it.

Window mastic in Hanover, done properly

Some gaps around frames are far deeper than they look. Packing it solid with sealant gives a joint that cannot flex, so deep gaps get backing rod first. That way the new bead bonds to the frame and the wall only. We work on window sills, composite doors and patio & French doors, and common reasons people get in touch are untidy mastic left by window fitters and white mastic on grey or black frames.

Around Hanover, conservatories, garden rooms and patio doors are often part of the house. Their glazing joints and frame seals are as much a part of the job as the windows, and any older timber or sash windows need a sealant that suits them.

A 12-month guarantee comes as standard, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

Leave it or put it right?

Resealing frames is a short job: it takes anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are. Leave it until water is coming in and you may need plastering and decorating as well. In an older home around Hanover, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the sealant itself.

There are no prices on our website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote and we’ll talk you through it.

Hanover homes and the weather

Hanover is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast.

If you live in an older home near Church of the Annunciation, the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall. Managing a site like Elm Grove Primary School? Then its window and door frames need their mastic kept sound, just like a home’s.

What affects the quote in Hanover

The quote reflects the job in front of us. We take into account:

  • Access and height
  • How many areas need sealing
  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • Which sealant suits the joint

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Helping us quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height

There’s no standard price list, as no two jobs are quite the same. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To arrange one, call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email.

Common problems we fix in Hanover

Older frames were often sealed with products that set hard. Once it’s rigid, every bit of frame movement pulls at it, leaving a hairline gap down one side.

People normally contact us when they notice one of these:

  • A bead that does not match the frame
  • Water coming in at the bottom corners of a door
  • Leaking joints at the ends of sills
  • Mastic that has split away from the wall

Letting a property close to Brighton station? Then cracked frame mastic tends to show up as a draught or damp complaint, so it’s worth checking between lets.

Before booking anyone

  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • Is VAT in the price?
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Whether they’re fully insured

How to choose a mastic man

Surface by surface

uPVC windows

The frame is cleaned with a product that will not harm the plastic, then the new bead is laid against the frame and the wall and tooled smooth.

Composite doors

A composite door generally sits in a plastic outer frame, so its perimeter joint is sealed much like a window. We match the colour to the frame.

Your questions about window mastic in Hanover

Does the coastal weather in Hanover affect outside sealant?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

I let a flat near Brighton station. Can you help?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can be quoted together. Just call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with the address and what needs doing, and we will give you a clear quote.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes, we can. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.

Will resealing my frames help with draughts?

If the draught is coming in around the frame, yes. If it’s coming through the window seals, we’ll tell you.

Can you seal the gap between the frame and the plaster indoors?

Yes. Draughts often come through the inside gap too, so sealing both is often worthwhile.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

We work from Crawley. We cover Hanover and the rest of Brighton and Hove.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. We can plan bigger jobs in stages.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It can look neat for a few weeks, but the new bead soon lifts. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

When it isn’t the sealant

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • A sash or casement that will not close properly
  • Soft or decayed wood in the frame
  • Condensation trapped between the panes

If you’re not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Patio & French doors
  • Composite doors
  • Aluminium frames
  • uPVC windows
  • Window sills
  • Timber windows & doors

The process

Before we leave, we go over the finished joints with you and explain the cure time. The work normally takes a few hours for a few frames, or a day or more for a whole house, depending on how much there is to do. Parking around Hanover is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention any lanes, gates or long drives. If the job is outside, tell us about side access and how high the joints are.

  1. First, we go round the frames with you and agree the list.
  2. The old mastic is cut out and scraped back to clean surfaces.
  3. Deep gaps get closed-cell backing rod to set the depth.
  4. The new sealant goes on in white, brown, anthracite grey, black or clear to suit.
  5. We tool each bead neatly and check every joint is closed.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
