Sand mastic in Palnure

Sand mastic for homes and businesses in Palnure

Sand mastic has long been used to fill the joint between timber frames and masonry. It’s a mix of sand and a linseed-oil-based binder and built up by hand. On period homes, it looks right where silicone wouldn’t. If you have crumbling sand mastic round a window and draughts and rain around sash boxes, we can help.

In and around a place like Palnure, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.

Common questions in Palnure

Is Palnure in your area for sand mastic?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Palnure is part of that. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we will send you a clear quote.

Will you come out to Palnure?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

What information do you need?

A short description and the location, plus pictures if you have them. If we need more, we will ask.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We are approved under the ARBOMaster scheme.

Is it possible to paint over sand mastic?

Traditional guidance is not to paint over sand mastic. Ask us before you decorate around it and we’ll talk you through it.

How long does the job take?

A typical job takes a few hours for a single window, longer for several, including the preparation. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. We work in offices, washrooms, hotels and other commercial premises, as well as homes. Working times can be discussed when we quote.

What sealant do you use?

Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, chosen to suit the joint. We will tell you what we are using and why.

For landlords and businesses

We also work for businesses, from offices to washrooms and kitchens. On commercial sites, working times can be discussed when we quote.

Water getting past a failed joint can damage the building, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance that we can handle for you.

Why act early in Palnure

Filling over old, loose mastic doesn’t last. We remove the loose material first so the new work lasts. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask a few questions first.

Quotes for sand mastic in Palnure

The price is agreed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • Any mould that needs treating
  • When we can work, for business premises
  • The number of rooms or windows
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove

There are no prices on our website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Helping us quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel

If you’re in Palnure and need sand mastic, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk. A short description of the job and where it is helps us quote, and we will agree the price before any work begins.

When it isn’t the sealant

To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:

  • Broken panes
  • Decayed frames that need repair
  • Sash cords, weights and draught-proofing of the sashes

Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Period & listed homes
  • Timber door frames
  • Sash and case windows
  • Stone surrounds
  • Brick reveals
  • Tenement windows

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we look over the joints with you first, so there are no surprises. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work begins. Most jobs take a few hours for a single window, longer for several. Outside jobs in Palnure need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors is not affected.

  1. We check each window surround and the condition of the joint.
  2. We rake out the old mastic and clean the joint.
  3. Large voids are packed out.
  4. New sand mastic is applied and shaped by hand.
  5. We finish the mastic to a tidy line.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

Should I try it myself first?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.

Sand mastic in Palnure: local notes

Palnure is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, especially on the side facing the sea. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, which means the mastic around older windows and doors has to cope with a lot of rain.

Around Palnure, as everywhere, sand mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it. For jobs in and around Palnure, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

Palnure is about 25 miles east of Stranraer, in Dumfries and Galloway. Wherever you are in the DG8 postcode area, our applicators can take on sand mastic. Palnure is one of 138 places in Dumfries and Galloway we cover. For nearby work, see our Glasgow page (63 miles or so).

Keeping the joints in good condition

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Don’t paint over the new mastic
  • Check the mastic when you check the paintwork
  • Have rotten timber repaired before new mastic goes in
  • Avoid patching sand mastic with silicone

Leave the new mastic alone while it firms up. It skins over quickly but needs longer to fully harden.

It’s best to renew mastic before painting the windows. Paint over cracked mastic only covers it up.
