Canada Sand Mastic
Our applicators work in Canada on traditional burnt sand mastic around sash and case windows and doors in stone and brick. Old material cut out, joints cleaned and sealed neatly and a one-year guarantee.
- Gaps between timber frames and stone or brick
- Cracked mastic round a front door frame
- Modern sealant on a period surround
Sand mastic in Canada, done properly
Silicone on a period window often looks wrong and isn’t always the right material. Sand mastic gives a finish that matches the age of the house and we can swap the silicone for it. If you have gaps between timber frames and stone or brick and wind and rain getting in round a sash window, we can help, whatever the surface.
In a village or hamlet like Canada, older cottages and farmhouses often have timber windows set in stone or brick. Not every older frame suits a modern silicone bead, and sometimes a traditional sand mastic is the better choice.
The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, phone 0345 464 0079 or email us.

Common problems we fix in Canada
Timber swells and shrinks with the weather. The movement cracks the mastic over time.
Any of these means the joints need attention:
- Silicone on a period window that looks wrong
- Draughty sash windows at the surround
- Crumbling sand mastic round a window
- Weathered mastic on the most exposed windows
Managing a site like Wellow School? Then its window and door frames need their mastic kept sound, just like a home’s.
What your quote should include
- What product goes in the joint
- Whether VAT is included
- What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
- What guarantee comes with the work
When something else is needed
New sealant can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant won’t put right:
- Decisions on consent for listed homes
- Sashes that need overhauling
- Timber that has rotted
Not sure which it is? You can phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will tell you honestly before you book.
What we seal
- Stone surrounds
- Timber door frames
- Brick reveals
- Tenement windows
- Sash and case windows
- Period & listed homes
Can I do it myself?
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
Quotes for sand mastic in Canada
We do not publish a price list, because no two jobs are the same. What we look at:
- The amount of work
- The old material and how stubborn it is
- When we can work, for business premises
- The product the joint needs
A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. We take all of that into account in your quote.
Asking for a quote
What to tell us when you ask for a quote:
- If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
- Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
For sand mastic in Canada, call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email. A short description of the job and where it is helps us quote, and we will agree the price before any work begins.
Leave it or put it right?
An open joint round the frame lets weather in. Left, water can reach the timber and the wall, so dealing with it now protects both. Older cottages and farmhouses around Canada can have timber floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.
A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

What else we do in Canada
What happens on the day
All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so you do not need to buy or prepare anything. After a quick look at the joints together, the area is protected and the work begins. It normally takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on how many windows. For a village or hamlet like Canada, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. Everything for the job comes with us, so a second trip is avoided where possible.
- We check each window surround and the condition of the joint.
- The joint is raked out and cleaned.
- Large voids are packed out.
- New sand mastic is applied and shaped by hand.
- We finish the mastic to a tidy line.
How to prepare
- Clear the area around the work
- Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
- Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
How to get a quote
Getting a quote is simple: tell us what needs doing and where and its rough size. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we will take it from there.

Frames and glazing around Canada
Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day. With historic houses such as Landford Manor (about 2 miles north-west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Canada as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that is traditional sand mastic.
For landlords with property near Romsey station, cracked sand mastic around sash windows lets in the draughts tenants complain about. Landford Manor, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Canada.
Canada is about 5 miles north-west of Totton, in Hampshire. Our applicators cover sand mastic for householders, landlords and businesses in Canada. Our Hampshire coverage runs to 683 places, and Canada is one of them. You can also see our page for Southampton, roughly 9 miles from Canada.

FAQs for Canada

Can sand mastic be painted?
Sand mastic is normally left unpainted, as guidance on traditional windows advises. Ask us before decorating.
Do the sealants smell?
Sometimes, a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.
Is sand mastic better than silicone for my windows?
We will talk it through with you. Period homes often look best with sand mastic and newer frames suit modern sealant.
What do you put in the joint?
Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.
Can you replace silicone on a period window with sand mastic?
Often, yes. With the silicone removed and the joint cleaned we point it with sand mastic.
Do you offer different sealant colours?
In most cases you can choose. We’ll tell you which colours the right product comes in.
Different surfaces, different methods
Stone surrounds
Stone openings are rarely perfectly straight, so the gap isn’t the same all the way round. We shape it by hand to follow the stone.
Period and listed homes
Period homes look their best with traditional materials.
