Regrouting in Minnigaff

Most regrouting jobs include resealing too. Grout is for the joints between tiles, but corners and edges move, so they need flexible silicone instead. Renewing both together means nothing is left half-done. We work on wet rooms, bathroom floors and kitchen splashbacks, and people most often call us about dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor and grout stained black or orange that won’t clean.

For a place like Minnigaff, the job is the same as anywhere: old material out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh, even finish. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, whatever its size.

What happens if it’s left?

Regrouting keeps the tiles you already have. Retiling is a much bigger job: stripping, making good, new tiles and new grout, and often a few days without a shower. When the tiles are fine, it’s the sensible first step. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are unsure, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Regrouting around Minnigaff

There are hotels and other places to stay in and around Minnigaff. As well as homes, we work in hotel bathrooms, where resealing and regrouting can be done room by room. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.

For an older house near a landmark such as Monigaff Parish Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Different surfaces, different methods

Wet rooms

Both the grout and the silicone in a wet room matter. We renew both.

Shower walls

The grout in a shower takes the brunt of the water. We replace it and renew the silicone at the edges.

Your questions about regrouting in Minnigaff

Do you cover smaller places like Minnigaff?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can you do regrouting in Minnigaff?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Minnigaff is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will send you a clear quote.

Where do you work from?

Our base is in Crawley, and we cover South East England, London and all of Scotland.

When can I use the shower again?

The wait depends on the materials and how warm the room is. We will give you a time to follow when the job is done.

Is there any odour?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure, which fades as it sets. Ventilation helps.

What guarantee comes with the work?

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, and we’re fully insured.

Can I do it myself?

It depends on the job. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

What do you put in the joint?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, picked for each joint. We’ll tell you what we are using and why.

What we’re called out for in Minnigaff

Grout is porous, so water, soap and grime soak into it. Given time, it discolours and begins to break down, especially in a shower that’s used every day.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Corners filled with grout instead of silicone
  • Crumbling grout between the tiles
  • Good tiles let down by tired grout
  • Grout washed out of a shower

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Douglas Ewart High School, washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

What your quote should include

  • What the cure time is
  • Are they insured?
  • How long the guarantee is
  • What the quote includes, VAT included or not

10 questions to ask before booking

Can I do it myself?

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Clean grout with a mild bathroom cleaner
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges
  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
  • Rinse the tiles after showering

Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner with a soft brush. Keep harsh bleach and acid limescale removers away from it because they wear grout away.

Fixing grout early is a small job. Left, the same problem can let water through so it’s worth dealing with as soon as you spot it.

The process

Good joint work is mostly preparation, and we don’t rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. Outdoor work around Minnigaff depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors is not affected.

  1. First, we check for loose or hollow tiles and point out any we find.
  2. We rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care of the tile edges.
  3. We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. The corners and edges get new silicone, because grout there would crack.
