Common questions in Wigtown

Do you cover Wigtown for regrouting?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Wigtown is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Will you come out to Wigtown?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?

Yes. Many jobs are just the shower walls, or just the joints that have failed.

What does regrouting cost?

Size, access and the old material all affect the cost. Ask us for a quote.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We’re ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.

Can tenants book the work?

Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Many landlords are glad to have it sorted.

Can you change the grout colour?

Yes. Because the old grout is raked out, the new colour goes all the way into the joint, not just the surface.

How long should I wait before showering?

It varies with the products and the room. We will give you a time to follow when the job is done.

How we handle regrouting in Wigtown

Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. When grout cracks or washes out, water has a way in behind the tiling. Our job is to rake it out and put new grout in and renew the silicone at the edges. We work on shower walls, kitchen splashbacks and tiled floors, and common reasons people get in touch are grout that’s cracking and breaking up and good tiles let down by tired grout.

Being further from a city does not change the work: old material out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh, even finish. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

Our work is backed for twelve months, in Wigtown and everywhere else we cover.

DIY versus a professional finish

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Different surfaces, different methods

Corners and edges

Internal corners move, so they get silicone, not grout.

Wet rooms

Wet rooms have water across the floor, so good grout is important. We check the tiles first.

How the visit works

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point us to the joints and we’ll get on with it. The job generally takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. For a place like Wigtown, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
  2. We remove the old grout carefully.
  3. Dust is cleared from every joint.
  4. We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
  5. We renew the silicone at the corners and edges.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Mention any parking rules near the property

Advice

When it is not the sealant

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It will not solve:

  • A leaking shower valve or waste
  • Movement in a stud wall or floor
  • Cracked or broken tiles

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Shower walls
  • Wet rooms
  • Tiled floors
  • Bathroom floors
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Kitchen splashbacks

Leave it or put it right?

Grout pens and paint-on colourants only cover the surface. They don’t fill cracks or stop water and stains often come back through. A proper regrout puts new grout in the joint. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask about the job first and give you a clear price before we start.

Why us?

Keeping the joints in good condition

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges
  • Have loose tiles looked at early
  • Give the walls a quick rinse after use

Give the new grout the time we tell you before using the shower, so it cures fully. From then on, a quick rinse after showering helps and let the room air.

Fixing grout early is a small job. Left, the same problem can let water through, so get it looked at when you notice it.

Regrouting around Wigtown

Wigtown is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

For an older house near a landmark such as Sacred Heart Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

Wigtown is about 24 miles east of Stranraer, in Dumfries and Galloway. Signs you need regrouting in Wigtown

Movement behind the tiles cracks grout. That can be a loose tile, a flexing floor or a stud wall, so we check the tiles before work begins.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • Floor grout that has worn and darkened
  • Grout in corners that has cracked
  • Discoloured grout on otherwise sound tiles

Around Wigtown, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.
