Regrouting in Lionel
We regroute showers, bathroom walls and floors, splashbacks and wet rooms. Some jobs are a whole room, others just the shower. Whatever the size, the method stays the same. We work on shower walls, tiled floors and wet rooms, and the jobs we see most are grout that makes sound tiles look old and shower grout that has worn away.
Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Where a building moves, cracked grout and split sealant are usually the first signs.
The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.

When to call us in Lionel
A poor original job is a common cause. If it was mixed too wet or not pressed in firmly can wash out within a few years.
If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:
- Splashback grout that has darkened
- Cracked grout along the bath or tray
- Grout washed out of a shower
- Dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor
Around Lionel, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Should I try it myself first?
If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We cut it out and start again.
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
Why deal with it now?
Once grout cracks, water can get behind the tiling. Leave it, and the adhesive or the wall behind can suffer, and then you are looking at retiling. Sorting it early keeps the job simple. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are unsure, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Common questions in Lionel
Is Lionel within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is there a guarantee on regrouting in Lionel?
All our work, in Lionel and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.
Do you take out the old sealant first?
Yes, every time. New sealant won’t bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.
Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?
We can. We’ll check the other tiled areas as well and let you know if more needs doing.
How long should I wait before showering?
It varies with the products and the room. We’ll tell you exactly how long when the job is done.
Do I need to be at home?
We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.
Will regrouting fix loose tiles?
New grout cannot hold loose tiles in place. We flag any loose or hollow tiles before starting so you know where you stand.
How long does the job take?
Most jobs take a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, including preparation and clearing up. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.
When something else is needed
Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:
- A leaking wet room membrane
- Cracked or broken tiles
- Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before you book.

The process
Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we do not rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it generally takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Somewhere like Lionel may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- We check the tiles are sound and flag any that are loose or hollow.
- The old grout comes out to a consistent depth, without damaging the tiles.
- We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
- We fill the joints with new grout, then clean the tiles.
- Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

Quotes for regrouting in Lionel
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- How many areas need sealing
- When we can work, for business premises
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- The product the joint needs
Every job is a little different, so we quote each one individually. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference, and we will explain the quote if you ask.
Helping us quote
Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
- The rough size of the job
- Photos by email, if that’s easy

Lionel homes and their sealant
Lionel is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.
Managing a site like Lionel School? Then washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

Keeping the joints in good condition
Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:
- Don’t ignore a tile that feels loose
- Clean with a soft brush, not anything metal
- Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
- Wipe water off the walls when you are done
If a tile starts to feel loose, get it looked at early. A loose tile cracks the grout around it and open a path for water.
Fixing grout early is a small job. Left, the same problem can let water through, so get it looked at when you notice it.
