How we handle regrouting in Hallglen

Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water can get in behind the tiles. Our job is to rake it out and put new grout in and renew the silicone at the edges. If you have a grout colour that no longer suits the room and crumbling grout between the tiles, we can help, on tiled floors, bathroom floors and bathroom wall tiles alike.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Hallglen work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee, large or small.

What affects the cost of regrouting

The price is agreed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • The type of sealant required
  • The number and length of the joints
  • Access and height
  • The old material and how stubborn it is

What you pay reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

What to tell us for a quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • Photos by email, if that’s easy
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.

How the job changes by surface

Bathroom floors

Regrouting a floor brightens the whole room. The edges where floor meets wall or bath get silicone.

Kitchen splashbacks

We can regroute a splashback with the kitchen left in place. The joint along the worktop is resealed with silicone.

Hallglen homes and their sealant

Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.

Schools such as Comely Park School are buildings too, and its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s. For an older house near a landmark such as The Tattie Kirk, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

What we do, step by step

Our applicators work methodically: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. Typically it takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. Somewhere like Hallglen may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
  2. Grout is raked out without chipping the tiles.
  3. Dust is cleared from every joint.
  4. The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.

Advice

Keeping the joints in good condition

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Wipe or squeegee the shower walls
  • Keep the fan on after showering
  • Don’t use strong acidic cleaners on grout
  • Have loose tiles looked at early

Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner with a soft brush. Keep harsh bleach and acid limescale removers away from it because they wear grout away.

Cracked grout does not stay cracked for long. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away, so regrouting early can save a retile.

Do you need regrouting in Hallglen?

Strong cleaning products and hard scrubbing slowly erode grout. Some bleaches and acid descalers break grout down over time, until the joints are rough and low.

Look out for these signs:

  • Grout that is cracking and breaking up
  • Grout in corners that has cracked
  • Floor grout that has worn and darkened
  • A grout colour that no longer suits the room

If you let a flat or house near Falkirk High station, a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Which colour the sealant will be
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • Who turns up on the day

Choosing a sealant specialist

Hallglen: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Hallglen?

Yes, Hallglen is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you work for landlords with property near Falkirk High station?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and what needs doing, and we will send you a clear quote.

How long should I wait before showering?

You will get a clear time from us before we go. Both the grout and the silicone need time to cure before they get wet.

Does someone need to be in?

If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. Once we’ve agreed the job, you don’t need to watch us work.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, because it fails. The old sealant always comes out first, so the new sealant bonds properly.

What guarantee comes with the work?

Our one-year guarantee applies to all our work, and we’re fully insured.

Can I do it myself?

It depends on the job. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

How long does the job take?

Typically it takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Bigger jobs take longer, and we will tell you how long to expect.

Should I try it myself first?

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
