About our regrouting in Brig o'Turk

When grout stays dark however much you clean it, the stain is often in the grout itself. New grout is the fix that lasts, and it’s a chance to change the colour too. We’re often asked to deal with splashback grout that has darkened and old grout in a dated colour, across shower walls, wet rooms and kitchen splashbacks.

In and around a place like Brig o'Turk, homes range from older stone-built properties to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What regrouting looks like in Brig o'Turk

Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in.

Managing a site like Trossachs Primary School Schoolhouse? Then we reseal washrooms and kitchens in schools and businesses as well as homes. If you live in an older home near Achray Church, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

The process

At the end, we look at the finished work together and tell you how long to leave it. The visit itself generally takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room, depending on the amount of work. Outdoor work around Brig o'Turk depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We start by checking the tiles for any that are loose or hollow.
  2. We rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care of the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

What the job involves on each surface

Bathroom wall tiles

Walls outside the shower get less water but still stain and crack. New grout freshens them up.

Shower walls

Showers put more water on grout than anywhere else. We rake it out and regrout, and reseal the corners.

How we quote for regrouting

Call for a quick quote. What matters most is:

  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • The size of the job
  • Any mould that needs treating
  • The old material and how stubborn it is

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

Asking for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • How we’d reach the joints

It all starts with a short chat. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job, and we will talk you through what we’d do. Whenever you’re ready, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Leave it or put it right?

New grout smeared over the old doesn’t bond well. A thin skin on top tends to break off. Raking out to a consistent depth gives the new grout something to hold. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

How to look after the new joints

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Do not ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Do not use strong acidic cleaners on grout
  • Wipe or squeegee the shower walls
  • Check the corner silicone every few months

If a tile starts to feel loose, get it looked at early. A loose tile cracks the grout around it and lets water in.

Tiles can come away if failed grout is left. By then, new grout alone isn’t enough, so it’s worth acting early.
