Regrouting in Drymen

A grout colour change can freshen a room without retiling. You might go from white to grey or back again. Just mention the colour you’d like when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk. We are often asked to deal with gaps where the shower grout has gone and stained grout that cleaning won’t shift, on bathroom floors, tiled floors and bathroom wall tiles.

For a place like Drymen, the job is the same as anywhere: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

Your questions about regrouting in Drymen

Do you cover Drymen for regrouting?

Yes, Drymen is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Do you cover smaller places like Drymen?

Yes, Drymen is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will you leave a mess?

Very little: the area around the joints is protected first, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.

Can I do it myself?

It depends on the job. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

How soon can the shower be used after regrouting?

You’ll get a clear time from us before we go. Both the grout and the silicone need time to cure before they get wet.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint before resealing.

Should corners be grouted or sealed?

We seal corners with silicone. They flex, and grout there cracks.

What does regrouting cost?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how much there is, what’s there now, how we reach it and what it needs. You’ll get a clear quote before work begins.

What we do, step by step

We bring everything the job needs with us, so you do not need to buy or prepare anything. After a quick look at the joints together, we protect the area and start. It normally takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Outside jobs in Drymen need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
  2. Grout is raked out without chipping the tiles.
  3. Dust is cleared from every joint.
  4. The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
  5. Internal corners and edges are resealed.

Advice

What we can’t put right

New sealant cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant will not put right:

  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving
  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling

Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Landlord and commercial work in Drymen

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s quick to put right between tenancies. We can quote for more than one property at once.

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which is a bigger problem in a rented property. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance.

Drymen homes and their sealant

Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Drymen has hotels and guest accommodation nearby. As well as homes, we work in hotel bathrooms, where resealing and regrouting can be done room by room.

For an older house near a landmark such as Drymen Parish Church and Churchyard, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.

What affects the quote in Drymen

Jobs vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • Access and height
  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • The number of rooms or windows
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference, and we will explain the quote if you ask.

Asking for a quote

When you call or email, it’s useful to know:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • Where the property is
  • A few pictures by email, if you can
  • The type of property

For a quote, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the location and a short description of the problem. We’ll give you a clear quote before any work starts.

Signs you need regrouting in Drymen

Harsh cleaners and scrubbing wear grout away. Bleach and acidic limescale removers can attack it over time, until the joints are rough and low.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Cracked or crumbling grout lines
  • Cracked grout along the bath or tray
  • Floor grout that won’t come clean
  • Splashback grout that has darkened

Around Drymen, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Choosing a sealant specialist

What happens if it’s left?

Once grout cracks, water can get behind the tiling. Leave it, and the adhesive or the wall behind can suffer, and then you’re looking at retiling. Dealing with it now keeps it small. Around Drymen, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

Combining jobs into one visit is usually more efficient than separate visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. We’ll send you a clear quote for the lot.

What you get with us

Looking after it afterwards

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Do not ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
  • Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering

Wipe the tiles down after a shower keeps water off the grout. Run the extractor fan or open a window so the grout dries between uses.

Stains that won’t clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. At this point it’s a simple regrout, before the joints open up.
