What regrouting looks like in Applecross

Applecross is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

Around Applecross, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Regrouting in Applecross

We work across Applecross, regrouting bathrooms, showers and kitchens. The old grout is raked out, the joints cleaned and new grout laid, finished with new silicone at the edges. We are often asked to deal with floor grout that has worn and darkened and gaps where the shower grout has gone, on wet rooms, kitchen splashbacks and tiled floors.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Applecross work just as hard as those in the cities. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

All our work is covered by our one-year guarantee.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Keep the fan on after showering
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
  • Clean with a soft brush, not anything metal
  • Don’t ignore a tile that feels loose

Leave the area unused for as long as we advise, so it can harden properly. From then on, a quick rinse after showering helps and keep the room ventilated.

Once grout cracks, it tends to get worse. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away and early regrouting can avoid a much bigger job.

What sealant work can’t fix

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • A leaking wet room membrane
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving
  • Tiles that are loose or hollow behind

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Bathroom floors
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Shower walls
  • Tiled floors
  • Wet rooms

Should I try it myself first?

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.

For landlords and businesses

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s easy to sort out between tenants. Several properties can go on one quote.

Housing providers, facilities teams and property managers book us too. We can quote a run of properties together.

Leave it or put it right?

Regrouting keeps the tiles you already have. Retiling means stripping the walls, making good and choosing new tiles, and the room is out of use for longer. When the tiles are fine, it’s the sensible first step. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

What happens on the day

Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we do not rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. For a place like Applecross, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We start by checking the tiles for any that are loose or hollow.
  2. The old grout comes out to a consistent depth, without damaging the tiles.
  3. The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
  4. We fill the joints with new grout, then clean the tiles.
  5. The corners and edges get new silicone, because grout there would crack.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Common questions in Applecross

Do you cover smaller places like Applecross?

Yes. Applecross is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is regrouting in Applecross guaranteed?

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever it is. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes. Domestic, commercial and hotel work are all part of what we do, and we are fully insured.

Where are you based?

We’re a Crawley-based firm. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

How do I get a quote for regrouting in Applecross?

The cost depends on the size of the job, access and how much old sealant has to come out. Call for a quick quote and we’ll talk you through it.

Is it messy?

No. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, every time. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.

What do you put in the joint?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

What we are called out for in Applecross

When tiles or the wall behind them move, the grout cracks. Loose tiles, bouncy floors and timber walls can all do it, so we check the tiles before we start.

Common reasons people contact us are:

  • Crumbling grout between the tiles
  • Greasy, stained grout behind the hob
  • A grout colour that no longer suits the room
  • Floor grout that has worn and darkened

In the older streets around Old Parish Church, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

What your quote should include

  • What insurance they hold
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • Is VAT in the price?
  • What happens if the job turns out different
