Regrouting in Amisfield

A grout colour change can freshen a room without retiling. You might go from white to grey, or the other way round. Just mention the colour you’d like when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk. If you’re dealing with grout washed out of a shower and old grout in a dated colour, we can put it right, on shower walls, wet rooms and tiled floors alike.

In and around a place like Amisfield, homes range from older stone-built properties to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee, large or small.

What regrouting looks like in Amisfield

Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.

Homes close to Tinwald Parish Church include some older properties, and older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

How we quote for regrouting

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • Mould in or behind the old joints

The cost depends on how much there is to do, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts.

Asking for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • The problem you’ve noticed

It all starts with a short chat. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job. Whenever you are ready, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How it works

Our applicators work methodically: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. For most jobs that takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Outside jobs in Amisfield need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We check the tiles are sound and flag any that are loose or hollow.
  2. Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
  3. We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. We reseal the internal corners and edges with silicone.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks

When to call us in Amisfield

A poor original job is a common cause. Grout that was too wet, not packed in or cleaned off too hard tends to wash out early.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned
  • Discoloured grout on otherwise sound tiles
  • Greasy, stained grout behind the hob

For landlords with property near Dumfries station, clean grout and fresh sealant between tenancies make a bathroom look cared for again.

Our hiring checklist

Can I do it myself?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We remove it and do the joint properly.

Leave it or put it right?

New grout smeared over the old does not bond well. A thin skin on top tends to break off, taking any repair with it. Raking out to a consistent depth gives the new grout something to hold. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all play a part, and we will explain the quote if you ask.

What information do you need?

We keep the work tidy. Nearby surfaces are protected, and we clear up when we’re done.

Do I have to be there?

It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access, and for outside work we will agree access with you when we book.

Is the work guaranteed?

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job.

What goes in the corners, grout or silicone?

Silicone. Grout is for the joints between tiles and moving joints need sealant.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes. Just list everything you need and we will quote it together.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:

  • Wipe or squeegee the shower walls
  • Skip wire brushes and scourers
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges
  • Get any tile that moves checked promptly

Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft brush. Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers because they wear grout away.

Grout that’s washing out of a shower shouldn’t be left. Every shower pushes more water into the gaps, and that water can reach the wall or the floor below.
