Why it’s worth doing now in Allandale

Once grout cracks, water can get behind the tiling. Leave it, and the adhesive or the wall behind can suffer, and then you’re looking at retiling. Sorting it early keeps the job simple. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are unsure, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you an honest view and a quote.

Regrouting in Allandale

Grout is the filler between your tiles, and sealant is what goes along the bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water has a way in behind the tiling. We rake it out and replace it, then reseal the corners and edges. Typical jobs include greasy, stained grout behind the hob and floor grout that won’t come clean, across wet rooms, kitchen splashbacks and shower walls.

Being further from a city does not change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee.

What sealant work cannot fix

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:

  • Loose tiles, which need refixing first
  • Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before booking.

Surfaces we seal

  • Wet rooms
  • Shower walls
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Bathroom floors
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Tiled floors

Common problems we fix in Allandale

Most grout is porous, so water, soap and grime soak into it. Given time, it discolours and begins to break down and showers that get daily use suffer most.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Grout stained black or orange that won’t clean
  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • Cracked grout along the bath or tray
  • A grout colour that no longer suits the room

For landlords with property near Cumbernauld station, a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.

Common questions in Allandale

I let a flat near Cumbernauld station. Can you help?

Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners, and several properties can be quoted together. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details for a clear quote.

Do you cover Allandale for regrouting?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Allandale is part of that. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

How long does the job take?

Most jobs take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room, including the preparation. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

Do you grout the corners?

Flexible sealant. Grout belongs between the tiles, while corners and edges need a joint that can move.

Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?

Yes. Many jobs are just the shower walls, or the area where the grout has gone.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, every time. New silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.

Will regrouting fix loose tiles?

Regrouting won’t fix loose tiles. We flag any loose or hollow tiles before starting so you know where you stand.

Is it messy?

We keep the work tidy. Nearby surfaces are protected, and we clear up when we are done.

Regrouting around Allandale

Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in.

Homes close to Haggs Parish Church include some older properties, and walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first. Schools such as Abronhill High School are buildings too, and washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

The process

On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

Related advice

Looking after it afterwards

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. Our tips:

  • Wipe water off the walls when you are done
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
  • Have loose tiles looked at early
  • Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout

Keep an eye on the silicone in the corners. Corners flex, so the sealant there will need renewing in time, long before the grout does.

Grout that stays dark after cleaning is starting to fail. At this point it’s a simple regrout, before the joints open up.

Can I do it myself?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, then guaranteed for a year.
