What we do, step by step
On the day, we look over the joints with you first, so there are no surprises. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work begins. The work usually takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run. For a place like Spittal, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- We find where the water is coming from and check the gutter is sound.
- The old sealant and dirt are cleaned out of the joint.
- We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
- We seal the joint with a sealant made for gutters.
- The gutter is checked and debris around the joints cleared.
How to prepare
- Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
- Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before

Gutter sealing in Spittal
A drip at a gutter joint is easy to ignore, but each shower sends water to the same place. Sealing it is quick if the gutter is otherwise in good order. We work on soffit joints, gutter joints and uPVC fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are old sealant on roofline trims that has split and old gutter sealant that has let go.
External sealant needs dry surfaces, so outdoor work around Spittal is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

Spittal buildings and the weather
Spittal is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, which means gutter, fascia and roofline joints has to cope with a lot of rain. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.
Around Spittal, as everywhere, gutter sealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.
Spittal is about 19 miles east of Stranraer, in Dumfries and Galloway. Across the DG8 area, our applicators can take on gutter sealing. Across Dumfries and Galloway, we cover 138 places, and Spittal is one of them. There’s also a page for Glasgow, roughly 68 miles from Spittal.

Keeping the joints in good condition
A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:
- Do not leave a sagging gutter
- Keep an eye out for wet patches below a joint
- Keep downpipes clear
- Glance at the soffit joints now and then
Clear the gutters once or twice a year, so water drains away past the joints. Standing water strains every seal.
The sooner a gutter leak is sealed, the less water reaches the wall. If we find a bigger problem, we will tell you.
What else we do in Spittal
Spittal: your questions answered
Is Spittal in your area for gutter sealing?
Yes, Spittal is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.
Will you come out to Spittal?
Yes. Spittal is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
What do you put in the joint?
Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, chosen to suit the joint. We will tell you what we are using and why.
Do you install new fascias or gutters?
No. We seal leaking joints and trims. A gutter installer or roofer deals with replacement.
Do I have to be there?
We need access to the joints, so we will agree that with you when we book. Indoors, that usually means someone at home.
What guarantee comes with the job?
There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job.
Do you offer different sealant colours?
In most cases you can choose. We’ll explain which colours are available and agree one before any work starts.
Do you work for letting agents?
Yes. We work for householders, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels across Dumfries and Galloway.
What happens if it’s left?
Replacing fascias because of open joints is usually unnecessary. Sealing the joints tidies them up as long as the boards are in good condition. In a place like Spittal, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.
No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all play a part.
What you get with us
- Every job guaranteed for a year
- Old sealant always removed completely
- We agree the colour with you first

Take a look at how sealant jobs are priced and our reviews.
Can I do it myself?
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
What we are called out for in Spittal
When a gutter sags, its joints open. Resealing a sagging joint will not last so the brackets need attention first.
The most common problems we see are:
- End caps that drip every time it rains
- Damp patches inside below a leaking gutter
- Quick sealant fixes on gutters that didn’t last
- Garage door frames letting rain in
Craighlaw, about 4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Spittal, and older homes nearby need a sealant that suits their walls.
Questions to ask before you book
- How long to leave it before use
- What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
