Trusted external mastic in Stenness

Stenness: your questions answered

Is Stenness within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is external mastic in a coastal place like Stenness any different?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. As well as homeowners, we work for landlords, agents, businesses and hotels.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Our base is Crawley, with over 20 years’ experience. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Do you seal joints where cladding meets other materials?

Yes. Materials like render, brick, metal and uPVC all move differently, so a flexible sealant is needed where they meet. The sealant is matched to both sides.

Is it messy?

Tidy work is part of the job. We protect what’s around the joints, and the area is left clean when we finish.

How long does external mastic take?

It depends on the size of the job, but as a guide it takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.

Why do you put foam in the joint first?

We fit closed-cell backing rod wherever the joint depth needs controlling. It controls the depth and stops the sealant bonding to the back, so the joint can move.

About our external mastic in Stenness

We are ARBOMaster approved applicators, and each external joint gets a sealant suited to it. Porous or awkward surfaces are primed where the sealant needs it, and we don’t skip that step. If you’re dealing with weeds or debris growing in open joints and failed seals between different materials, we can put it right.

Older stone buildings need a sealant that suits the stone, not an acetoxy product that can mark or attack it. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, whatever its size.

What happens if it’s left?

Resealing a run of joints in one go is generally better than patching one at a time. Joints of the same age tend to fail together. In a place like Stenness, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, along with when we can work on site. Ask us for a quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Do you need external mastic in Stenness?

A lot of failed joints come down to preparation: dusty or wet faces, no primer where one was needed, or old sealant left in. The new sealant then lets go long before it should.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • Moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left
  • Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
  • Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
  • Joints where the bead has come unstuck

In and around Stenness, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

10 questions to ask before booking

What external mastic looks like in Stenness

Stenness is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.

If you live in an older home near Stenness Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Stenness is about 9 miles west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. Anywhere in KW16, we can carry out external mastic at your property. We cover 51 towns and villages across the Orkney Islands, from the larger towns to small villages.

We work across the KW16 postcode area for external mastic and the streets around it. Other places close to Stenness include Clouston (1 mile south-west), Grimeston (2 miles north), Germiston (2 miles east), Cairston (2 miles west) and Wasbister (3 miles north-west). What sealant work cannot fix

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It will not solve:

  • Movement that’s more than a sealant joint can take
  • Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
  • Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work

If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

Letting agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the address, the job and how access works and we’ll quote.

Housing providers, facilities teams and property managers book us too in Stenness and across the Orkney Islands. Several sites can go on one quote, and we are fully insured.

How the visit works

There’s no need to move everything out, only the area right around the joints. We protect the rest, and the work takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation for a typical job. For a place like Stenness, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
  3. Joint faces are cleaned back and primed if the sealant needs it.
  4. Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
  5. The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.

Preparing for the visit

  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks

Quotes for external mastic in Stenness

We don’t publish a price list. What we look at:

  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • Access and height
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out

We don’t show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will talk you through it.

Asking for a quote

There’s no need for technical detail. Just tell us:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • Whether it’s a home or a business

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and email pictures if that’s easy.

How the job changes by surface

Cladding and façade panels

Cladding and façade panels are usually separated by sealed joints. We reseal them with a sealant suited to the panel material.

Concrete and blockwork

The face of concrete or block is often dusty, so preparation is key. A primer goes on where the product requires one.
